See Mike Coffey lie!
Who can forget Mike Coffey's unequivocal support of the Planning Commissioners decision on Safeway at the candidates forum on Thursday October 16, 2003?

Will he be so clear on Monday?

  1. In case you can’t access the video here’s what he says:

“I have stated at a number of occasions I agree with the planning commissioners and if that project comes before the city council I will turn it down.

Come back with a plan based on the recommendations of the planning commission.

    Is that clear?

    Thank you.”

  2. Well, let’s see…that was before the election!…things might change as Terry already (might) change her mind! We’ll see

  3. If you take Mike Coffey at his word and if you think his supporters did the same then 80 percent of the voters in the last election opposed this Safeway plan. Janney got 20% and everyone else (with 80%) said “no”. So, if Mike does anything but vote “no” I’ll bet a recall would be an easy thing to get passed.

  4. It is interesting that Safeway has been handing out a flyer exhorting shoppers to voice their support for the plan and suggesting that a small minority could block the new store.

The small minority includes 80% of the electorate and 6 of the seven planning commissioners. Some minority!

Thank you for reminding me of the actual words from Coffey’s mouth because I remember how hard it was to get a definitive answer about his opinion on Safeway. His “is that clear” words can’t be clearer than they are and leave no wiggle room!

  6. It was an interesting meeting on TV tonight. Here is the question that has been bothering me:

Why does Safeway not have an alternative plan?

    A. They are bad business people who don’t plan for contingencies

    B. They bet wrong on the last election

    C. Their lawyer has been telling them it will be ok

    D. They forgot that they could negotiate with Walgreens

    E. All of the above

  7. What fascinates me the most is that Mike Coffey has seen the Plan B. That’s why he broke his election promise. He stated quite clearly on Tuesday that this plan is NOT the same as the planning commissioners opined on. Unfortunately no one has seen this new plan other than Mr. Coffey. Not the planning department, not the planning commissioners, not the other councilmembers and not the public.
So does Plan B exist .. or is Mr. Coffey caught in another lie?

Today’s letter in the Daily Journal
    “Flip-flopping Coffey

Last October at a candidates debate, Burlingame City Councilmember Mike Coffey said, “I have stated at a number of occasions, I agree with the Planning Commission and if that project comes before the City Council I will turn it down. Come back with a plan based on the recommendations of the planning commission. Is that clear?”

Yes Mike Coffey, he made that very clear after months of evading any comment about where you stood on Safeway. Not more than two months after your election you change your mind and vote to support the original Safeway plan. The same plan the Planning Commissioners rejected 6-1.

His flip-flop vote last week on this major project shows arrogance toward the people of Burlingame who voted for him based on the above statement. How sad that this is another case of a politician who will do or say anything to get a vote.

At the budget study session he was about as interested as a dead fly! His mind must have been in Florida. A neighbor asked me if it was true that he rents a house here but his main residence is in Florida. Maybe that explains the comment about renters v. homeowners! Maybe he is just waiting for his life time medical benefits to kick in after five years of service. We’ll see.

  10. Liar! Liar! Pants on fire. He’s a joke that is no longer funny.

  11. Here’s a tidbit from today’s SF Chronicle Magazine (April 18th, page 6) article on the Allied Arts Guild in Menlo Park. It’s mostly about that cute little neighborhood, but mentions:

“Safeway recently announced plans to tear down its bunker (originally Alec supermarket) at Middle and El Camino and rebuild in the Allied Arts style.”

Safeway must have hired a better lawyer in Menlo Park.

Coffey has been very quiet during the latest chapter on the Safeway Saga.

Does he still stand by his very clear message – as in Is that Clear – that Plan A does not work for Burlingame. Perhaps it is clearer now that it was then!
