Last night in a packed city chamber, Safeway appealed the 6-1 planning commissioners vote against their long standing project. The ever-so-busy local attorney Mr. Mark Hudak used his honey tongue to give a 'do or die' presentation for his client that, as usual, obfuscated the facts.

Then some forty three residents and local merchants gave their impassioned pleas to the council to uphold the planning commissioners vote while six residents, developers and Safeway employees urged the council to overturn the vote and approve the project.

With the clock at 11pm, Mayor Rosalie O'Mahony closed the public comment period and adjourned the council discussion and vote until Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm when hopefully clear minds will prevail.

I wonder what wheeling a dealing will be taking place behind closed doors today?

  1. I was unable to attend the meeting, but want to commend all of our neighbors who took the time and trouble to make their voices heard at the City Council chambers. The meeting was televised (hopefully tonight’s proceedings will also find their way to the cable station??).

Given the public outcry against this project (one speaker nailed it precisely saying something along the lines of “We wouldn’t consider a Wal_Mart or Home Depot at that location, why would we seriously consider the same sized Safeway?”), can the City Council overturn the work of the Planning Commission? Would the Council turn a deaf ear to the residents?

Or will the project be put on “hold”? Or will City Council “hold the mayo”? (Sorry, if you didn’t see the various speeches, I’m afraid that reference is too obscure…)

Anyway, kudos to all who spoke Monday evening. That’s what makes Burlingame a special place. People care.

  2. is there a revenue gained with the Safeway expansion vs. revenue lost with Gymboree and Body Shop? I am opposed to the project. I am for revenues for the city, but not in a way that concerns/effect our “special place”, in you words.

  3. Mr Hudak focused a lot on this issue last night, as did Mr. Galligan.

Grocery items are not taxable, though prepared foods are. So are greeting cards, photo services, flowers, and video rentals.

However these are services that are already available on the Avenue. Any gain in tax revenue from Safeway will come at the loss for the other merchants, so the net gain for Burlingame is probably close to zero.

In the word of one planning commissioner the tax effect is a canard!

  4. I was so proud to be in all of your company last night. If nothing else, I feel I have met so many soulmates on this crazy seven year journey, and that has made it all worthwhile. Safeway can never take that from us.
