Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

In a tense meeting this evening, the council finally got to consider and vote on the Safeway project. Terry Nagel led the discussion off with a spirited speech and a resounding No, claiming she 'never, ever' wants to see this plan again.

Nagel was supported by Cathy Baylock who pointed out that this project has lingered around Burlingame for over seven years, and that the council owes the applicant a definitive answer.

Councilman Galligan invoked ' patriotism', 'support of the elderly', 'non-voting renters' and claimed that the only the people who were opposed to this project were the wealthy (he can inspect my tax return anytime he wants!) and pointed out how much Safeway has given to the community!

Mike Coffey, true to form, reneged completely on his campaign promises, and supported the applicant, saying that the project had changed since the planning commission vote. What changes?

It was up to Mayor O'Mahony to cast the deciding vote. She was tempted to soften the blow to Safeway, and Galligan relentlessly tried to get city planner Monroe to define what a 'significant ' revision would be. He nearly trapped O'Mahony into defining what would be acceptable but in the end Ms. O'Mahony voted with Nagel and Baylock.

Now Safeway must return with a significantly revised project, one that will be subject to design review.

Why can’t we, the informed public, correct the egregious the lies certain council members spewed out from the council dias today? The hisses and boos from the audience spoke loud and clear. Thankfully the sleazy games did NOT work. How can these people sleep at night? Coffey and Galligan should be ashamed of themselves and Hudak – go back to the drawing board – metaphorically and physically. Thank you to Ms. Nagel, Ms. Baylock and Ms O’Mahony for the backbone, the integrity and the sheer guts to fight the bully tactics and intimidation and want the best Safeway for Burlingame. To the people who worked so hard and used up their precious time and energy – civic engagement works. For all the “silent” majority that supposedly (as per Galligan) wanted the humongous Safeway, get off your butts and get involved!

  2. Good job to the three women on Council, who actually have a grasp of what this project could have done to the town.

But, this is a long way from over. It would be nice if Safeway got the message, but they didn’t. Expect nips and tucks. Hopefully design review and our talented commissioners can reign it in.
And poor Mr. Tolu of Fox Mall may find his back entrance one day seized, by the very Councilmember who claims to ferociously defend personal property rights, Joe Galligan.

  3. Wow, did we really do it? I couldn’t be there tonight (except in spirit). Thank you!
Thank you! Everyone! Especially the Ladies of the Council; our true stewards (stewardesses?) of Burlingame
