It’s one thing when a complete neophyte doesn’t know or follow the rules. It’s quite another when someone who has been in the game for years doesn’t follow the rules. And it is even worse when the candidate is running for Chief Elections Officer (and Assessor/Clerk Recorder). County Supe David Canepa has been in the game for a long time and I’m sure he knows the rules against posting campaign signs on public right of way. So why not get his workers to follow the rules? He was at an event on the Avenew two days ago and may have even seen this illegally placed sign. Not cool. And we still have two weeks of frantic sign placement to go.

I happened by the scene of the sign crime today and the wars are heating up. Someone snatched the Canepa sign and tossed it aside, leaving the wire. Magically an Irizarry sign landed on the Mollie Stones corner–also illegal since I’m pretty sure Mollie’s didn’t OK it.

Mark Simon at the DJ weighed in with some pithyness:

In fairness, I have seen at least one online statement by Canepa that included an assertion that he would “not let ICE” stop county residents from voting. This is the sort of sweeping and unsupported statement for which Canepa is semi-famous, and it gives people pause.

Said Speier: If you look at the other candidate (Canepa), he has served on the board for 10 years – not one supervisor who he served with has endorsed him. All the professionals who are elected on the county level – not one has endorsed him. He’s not prepared for the job. He’s not qualified for the job.”

From some news report, I read if Canepa wins he will have to go get the Assessor’s credential–post election. What if he fails the test? Do over?

Oh dear. If elected, I believe he has a year to get the Assessor’s credential. This is very concerning. There is a real possibility that he does not pass. He does not understand finance and economics. It will be cheaper if the County gets him a tutor for the test instead of having to deal with a special election to fill the seat if he does not pass.

BTW the sign was back this morning in the same spot.
