Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

B'game PD collates the crime year-in-review annually and we bring it to you with historical context in an easily consumed format.  Last year's post highlighted the decline in catalytic converter theft; a trend that continued in 2024 almost to the point of vanishing.  It just goes to show that when you go after the buyers, the sellers have nowhere to sell.  Vehicle burglaries also declined a lot and a new category–Organized Retail Theft–was blessedly low.

The big news of last year and this month was the two shootings–one fatal and the other luckily not fatal at the H'borough Police station.  Let's hope that trend does not continue to the point where we need to add a category.  The attempted abduction that was foiled by two Good Samaritans and quick police work gave us all pause but verified that license plate readers are valuable.  Chief Matteucci retired late last year after 33 years on the force and he one guy who is able to say that he "went out on a low note"–one of the few jobs where that is a good thing!  Here are the stats for 2024 and a photo of the retirement.

According to the paper there were five car break-ins in about an hour over on Bayshore this week. Do we believe all these numbers?

If they are in the paper, they are counted since that is where the DJ is getting the information.
Down in San Mateo we see Law Enforcement 2025 in action per the DJ:
A man wanted for taking a bottle of alcohol from a drug store Friday chose a highway overpass as a hideout when he tried to make a getaway, police said. It didn’t work.
A drone found Wilfran Perez Gomez, 19, hiding on an embankment beneath the 3rd Avenue overpass that crosses U.S. Highway 101, San Mateo police said in a press release.
When he refused to come out after negotiating for over an hour, officers used a non-lethal launcher to deploy pepper spray near Perez, police said.
The irritant was effective, and he was arrested safely, police said.

Along with the criminal charges there should be a bill for the time wasted on this.

This is in the newsletter this week
Burlingame City Manager Lisa K. Goldman is pleased to announce the appointment of Raj Vaswani as the City’s next Police Chief. Following a thorough and extensive search, including interviews with other Police Chiefs and the entire Burlingame Department Head team, City Manager Goldman selected Mr. Vaswani to serve as the new Police Chief. He will be replacing former Police Chief Michael Matteucci, who retired in December 2024 after 33 years of service with the Burlingame Police Department.
“I am delighted to welcome Raj Vaswani to the City of Burlingame and look forward to working with him,” said City Manager Lisa Goldman. “With his wealth of experience in law enforcement, Raj was my top pick and was the unanimous choice of the City’s Department Head team. I’m confident his expertise and commitment will make him a tremendous asset to the organization and the Burlingame community.”
Chief Vaswani has over 31 years of experience in law enforcement for the San Francisco Police Department, most recently working as Deputy Chief of the Special Operations Bureau. Prior to that, he served on SFPD’s Command Staff as Commander of Investigations and Deputy Chief of Investigations. As a Police Captain, he held several assignments, including Citywide Night Captain and Motors/Traffic Unit, and served as commanding officer for two stations, Park and Bayview. Earlier in his career as a Lieutenant, he was a watch commander in the Mission District and later worked in the Administration Bureau on business permitting, special projects, and facilities. He eventually served in the Chief of Staff’s Office, overseeing the Legal Division. Chief Vaswani holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from San Jose State University and is a graduate of the San Francisco Police Department’s Leadership Development Institute (2019 to 2020 cohort).

The license plate readers kicked in again:

On Thursday, October 16, 2025, at approximately 4:33 p.m., BPD officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Old Bayshore Road on the report of a robbery that had just occurred.

The victim reported that two male suspects approached him in a parking lot and simulated having a firearm concealed in a hoodie pocket. The suspects took the victim’s backpack and suitcase before fleeing northbound on Old Bayshore Boulevard in a black sedan. Through the use of local Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras, investigators were able to track the suspect vehicle to San Francisco.

SFPD officers located the vehicle, which subsequently entered the highway. California Highway Patrol officers pursued the vehicle westbound (Ed: pretty sure they mean “eastbound”) on Interstate 580 into Richmond, where they detained the occupants, identified as Angel Alegrerangel and Gerardo Valenciadiaz, both 19-year-old residents of Richmond.
Burlingame Police Department officers responded to Richmond to assume the investigation. The victim’s property was recovered in the vehicle, and both suspects were placed under arrest for robbery and conspiracy. Alegrerangel and Valenciadiaz were booked into the San Mateo County Jail.
