I got the Nixle alert on this incident on Friday as reported in the DJ

A Caltrain commuter train struck a vehicle in Burlingame Friday morning, disrupting train service in the area.  The vehicle was hit at a crossing gate at Broadway in Burlingame at 8:49 a.m., Caltrain officials said.

Trains started single-tracking through the area as of about 9:10 a.m. and had resumed full speed service as of about 10 a.m.  No injuries were reported from the vehicle strike.  The roughly 900 passengers who were on board the affected train were dropped off at the Millbrae station and boarded a different train.

I've had several conversations with locals about the complicated lane alignment on the new overpass and the crazy drivers who seem to think the train gates have eyes and can react to their limited driving skills.  Not much we can do about the later, but I hope the lanes are not permanently as they are today.  With all of the bayfront development on the horizon this could only get worse!

The weekend edition of the Daily Post added this tidbit to the train collision: “Caltrain said in the last year at least three vehicles have been hit by a train at the intersection”.

I don’t think the train hits them as much as they don’t get out of the train’s way.

I think you are right. If the choice was breaking through the gate or getting the whole care totaled wouldn’t you just hit the gas and go through the gate??????????

  4. There is something wrong with that traffic signal. Which is compounded by the poorly put-down lane markings and awful signal placement.
