Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

"Community" has been a very frequent word for me to use over the last six months.  As many of you know because you were there, we held a funeral and a celebration of life for our younger son, Nick, yesterday at St. Catherine's church and parish center.  I feel blessed to have been joined by so many dear friends at such a crucial time for healing to begin.  You can read Nick's obituary here and get a good sense of how embedded in the B'game community he was.  There are many, many people I could thank for their support over the last six months, but I will do that privately if I have not already done so.

Here is a good place to offer a communal "Thank You!"  At the celebration of life, people from all different aspects of our B'game community came together and to a person they noted what a tight knit community it is.  There were several instances of rapprochement, or "burying the hatchet", that happened during the celebration.  Not all involved me or my family, but people who saw each other, heard a homily by Fr. John Ryan that emphasized treating people with kindness, and felt moved to do just that.

So thank you to everyone in the community for making it a community that supports each other.  When you need it, you really need it.

These are the times when community provides support to family and friends.
Nicky was beloved by so many people. One of the most unforgettable memorials I have ever witnessed. Thank you Joe, Cathy and A. J. And Natalie for sharing Nicky with us.

Lost a son at 3 mos old. Can’t imagine losing one at 23. So very very sorry for the loss of your beloved son.
When will a cure be found for this disease that is affecting more and more young lives?

I didn’t know your son, but it seems he was a good man. That usually means he had good parents. You should be proud.
I will attempt to honor his memory.
    I enjoy your blog.

Joe and Cathy, I’m very sorry for your loss. Your son being so ingrained in the Burlingame community is not only a testament to you as role models but his memory lives on through the many people he touched. That impact can never be taken away.
Love and prayers to you and your family.

Joe and Cathy, to say I am shocked at hearing about Nicky’s passing is an understatement. When he came through BIS I had the pleasure of having your intelligent and creative son and he was a joy. I don’t know if I ever saw him after age 14, but I do see A.J. around town every once in a while. I still remember blasting Nicky for bringing the same gumball machine for the Rube Goldberg project that A.J. used two years before! He will be so missed and my heart goes out to you all. My brother died last year and my Mom is still working through it. I don’t know if it ever ends. Love you, Nicky! Now put on a Giants Hat and get rid of the Yankees Gear! Or was that A.J.?
    Take care,
    Mr. Osberg

Thank you, Jeff. I remember volunteering in the Rube Goldberg class and enjoying watching the kids actually try to build something. AJ was the Yankees fan, but he has gotten over it! Sorry to hear about your brother…….

  13. Thank you Mr. O. You were one of Nicky’s favorite teachers. Your kind words help ease this mother’s grief. xo
