Another cute four square bungalow will leave Burlingame soon. It will be replaced with another generic off the shelf solution. I can recall that, not so many years ago, before "design review" was a part of Burlingame's vernacular, one planning commissioner put together a slide show with homes he deemed inappropriate and showed it to the council and community. It was a strong argument for "design review." Today, it seems while some residential designs have improved, the architects are resting on their laurels and simply pulling out the same old designs that they think will sail through planning commission. I, for one, would like to see a little more effort put into residential design and I would like to see an earnest discussion of mass and bulk a.k.a floor area ration (FAR). These homes in my opinion are simply too big for the lots they are on. Period. Let's see if the planning commission and the new council put this onto this year's goal list. It's time to visit this issue.
