The SF Examiner has a nice recap of the work that is going on to upgrade our water system

The 19-mile Crystal Springs Pipeline No. 2 is set to undergo major seismic upgrades and repairs with construction possibly lasting through January 2013, said Susan Hou, the project’s manager with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

The longest segment of repairs — 3.2 miles of pipe — lies between Hillsborough and Burlingame along busy El Camino Real. Engineers will dig 11 pits along the thouroughfare, through which they will thread new pipe along the existing pipe to avoid tearing up the road and causing further traffic congestion.

At the north end of town, there is some effort to minimize the impact

“Especially in this economy, I’m always concerned with anything that can affect peoples businesses,” said Steve Musich, who owns about 25 percent of the Burlingame Plaza Shopping Center, near one of the future construction sites.

To alleviate any potential loss in business, the SFPUC is planning night work in various commercial areas, including the one near Burlingame Plaza, said Daniel Jaimes, a San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokesman for the project.

Hopefully we will be ready for the 63% chance of a major earthquake in the next 30 years that the article mentions.

Does anyone else think our city water tastes and smells a little swampy lately?

Actually it smells and tastes overly bleach-y….over chlorinated.

It looks like we are ready to go on the Hetch Hetchy pipeline rebuild. Backhoes, pipe and cones are out on El Camino. The City reports:
More than 3 miles of pipeline will be replaced along El Camino Real in Hillsborough, Burlingame and Millbrae before the end of 2012.
At this stage, pipeline installation requires the excavation of two access pits along El Camino Real – one near Adeline Dr. and another near Dufferin Ave. This work is occurring in the southbound lane closest to the sidewalk. Work areas are approximately 300-feet long and one traffic lane wide. Access pits may remain for 3-6 months.

Kudos to the contractor who has posted a bright orange “Share the Road” [with Bikes]diamond sign along the ECR which has helped slow traffic tremendously along this tiny increment of popular and highly used, although unsigned bike route between Ray Dr and Trousdale.
