OK, so it's not in B'game, but it's still remarkable…the Daily Journal is reporting

An Atherton school teacher was placed on paid administrative leave after he rattled a table to get the attention of his math students, startling an eighth-grade girl who used her cell phone to call police.

Atherton police Sgt. Tim Lynch said that officers went to Selby Lane School Tuesday afternoon because of reports a teacher was causing a disturbance.  Officers found a calm teacher with class in session.

The sergeant says the teacher’s table-rattling startled a student and she used her cell phone to call 911. He says other students in the class weren’t bothered by the teacher’s actions.

Redwood City School District Deputy Superintendent John Baker says the teacher was placed on leave because there was a police response.

I've never heard of John Baker, but he definitely needs to wake up and join the real world.  If we wanted mindless drones to run our schools we wouldn't need to pay 6-figure salaries.  And when the teacher sues, then what?

It looks like one 8th grade girl was NOT PAYING ATTENTION in class. Shouldn’t she get detention for that?

I agree. I do not blame the teacher. I would have kicked that kid who was not paying attention out of my classroom! He/she is lucky only his table shook!
Hello! Teachers get your power back. You should rule the classroom not the kids. You must set the rules in your classrooms not the kids and their parents. I have tremendous respect for Teachers and I hope this country wake up and pay the respect and $pay you deserve. I am not a Teacher and not related to one. Good luck and don’t quit! We need you.

I agree with SS whole hearted.
Media and parents put so much fear into children, the child does not have the tools to discern normal human behavior.
It makes you wonder how the human race has been able to continue.
Now that I think about it..
Maybe that is why(human race)is in decline.
Teachers are the building blocks of socitey.
I do not understand why Teachers are consistantly being demonized for pay/benefits/etc.

Well, well…Anne, Holy Roller, Scheherezade (and me) agree on something! Perhaps I will have to reach out further in the Bay Area more often.

This is the first! We all agreed! And it’s a good one! I want to go further. Johnny’s parents whose son was not paying attention to the teacher, repeatedly created noise and disturbance when my daughter was in third grade has to share the money I had to pay for private school. Their son was the reason I/my daughter could not use this beautiful system that exists and that we are paying for it through our taxes. I am not implying that Johnnys only exist in public schools. I can tell you this that private schools are not forced to tolerate as much as public schools. They will shake the desk or kick Johnny out of the school very fast! Teachers I am 100% behind you no matter where you work. Thank you for teaching our kids things that we can’t because we have to work to feed them!

‘Totally agree, Scheherezade. Back in the 1960s and ’70s, nobody messed with public school teachers, either. We had a fair number of teachers in elementary and grammar school with really bad tempers, both men and women. All of us from the era certainly have our fair share of stories. We learned quickly not to mess around. Those who didn’t were humiliated in front of everyone. Desks were thrown across the room if unkept. Kids had their had hair or ears pulled and nobody came to the rescue. It sounds shocking and nowadays parents would probably sue the school district if anything like this would occur. I have no idea when the change occurred–Possibly early 1980s(?)– I think that was when Whole Language was de rigueur and spelling became ‘creative’, rather than phonetic.

Know what else they didn’t have in the 60s and 70s? Lockdowns and kids attacking schools with assualt weapons and pipe bombs.
