Here's notice of a quick promotion at the Times–which might be just what the Times needs. The paper has slowly decayed into a newswire rehash service with a distinctively East Bay tilt, except for sports and local gadfly John Horgan who is still out and about in the community talking to real people. Jennifer has quite a task ahead of her. She might consider blogging on here about her plans for improvements to the news staff. Since she has hired many of them it is time to think about training them to find real news.

County native Jennifer Christgau-Aquino, managing editor of the San Mateo County Times for the past 10 months, has been promoted to executive editor of the county's leading daily newspaper.
The announcement was made Friday by Pete Wevurski, editor of the ANG Newspapers, which also publishes five newspapers in the East Bay.During her tenure as managing editor, Aquino recruited more than half of the newsroom's reporters and shifted the staff's focus from process-of-government stories to impact-of-government reports. Under her direction, Times reporters have aggressively pursued in-depth reports on local issues that affect readers' everyday lives.
Among the reports she directed have been the wave of suicides among California Highway Patrol officers, the anniversary coverage of the 1906 earthquake and the upcoming series on San Carlos volunteers helping Gulf Coast residents rebound from Hurricane Katrina.
"Jennifer has done a magnificent job building a talented and energetic staff and setting both a standard and a direction for the Times for the months and years ahead," Wevurski said. "We were delighted when she joined us almost a year ago, but not nearly as much as we are at making this appointment."
Aquino came to ANG in October 2005 after three years as associate editor of the Palo Alto Weekly. She previously worked as an editor for the Independent Newspaper Group and was a reporter in the Manteca bureau of the Stockton Record.
"I read the San Mateo Times as a child and am honored to carry on the paper's history of quality journalism on the Peninsula. I have faith that with this talented team of writers, editors, designers and photographers the paper will continue to affect people's lives with quality stories," Aquino said.
Aquino grew up in Belmont, where her parents have lived for more than 40 years. A graduate of Hillsdale High School, she is a journalism school graduate of San Francisco State University.
Aquino resides in San Mateo with her husband, Andrew, and their dog and cat. Her father, John Christgau, is an acclaimed local author and her mother, Peggy, is an artist.
Aquino's appointment takes effect immediately.
