Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

After inquiries were made to the Parks and Rec director about the slow progress on the refurbishment of the Pershing Park playground, the Burlingame Voice received this response from Parks Superintendant Tim Richmond:

New playground equipment is finally visible at Pershing Park. After two lengthy design related delays, the final phases of the construction are occurring. Both the construction drawings and the equipment installation plan had to be modified after inaccuracies were discovered in source park documents. When all the equipment has been installed, a layer of rough concrete will be poured. This will form the base for the safety surfacing. The safety surfacing installation will mark the final step of the construction process.

The delays have been a great disappointment to neighbors, park users, staff, and all those involved in the construction. We are all eager for the project to come to a successful completion. When an exact completion date can credibly be given, it will be publicized.

In the meantime the kids peer wistfully through the fence hoping the new playground equipment will be ready before they have to go back to school.

Sounds just like the Burlingame Park Department we all know.

Pershing Park will be completed when school begins after all we wouldn’t want kids messing up city land.

I’m sure it is not easy building a play structure…

But, if I was betwen the ages of 5-11, I would be pretty livid about the delay…

Burlingame should be certain to provide some sort of party, celebration, grand re-opening geared towards these kids… as a, you know, ‘sorry we took your “fresh” play equipment away for the summer…’

    If those kids could vote…

In a way, I’m sorry to see the old stuff gone. This new type of play equipment my be sue-proof, but it lacks imagination. One of the best parks in town was the old one inside lot “J” with the cool submarine play structure. My kid still remembers flying off of it from way high and spraining his ankle. But he says it with glee; it is a fond memory he has of just how far he could jump. The swings there were great, until they were shortened, and those horsey swings were the kids favorite. We even had those as kids at Washington park. The sand is now all but gone, replaced by this weird old tire formula. I’m sorry for these kids. They won’t know the difference, but each park used to be quite unique.

Pershing Park is absolutely beautifully maintained thanks to our Park Department but this playground delay is ridiculous. Noone seems to be working on it? Get it done, folks, so those kids can be away from the computers, outside in the fresh air and enjoy the hazy crazy days of summer!
