  • What an interesting Council meeting this evening. A standing room only crowd of supporters from all sides, cake, Gerald's champagne and with some rudeness and discourtesy thrown in. Galligan decided he was ill and could only stay for the 60 minutes of Janney plaudits but had to leave before the 15 minute signing in ceremony of the new council member. This tells you volumes about bad sportsmanship, class (or lack thereof), courtesy (or lack thereof) and childish behaviour. Suck it up, Galligan, and work together with Mrs. O' Mahony, Mrs. Baylock and Mrs Nagel. That would show us that you have a semblance of class!

  • What a gem it was to hear local residents tell us their Seabiscuit stories at The Burlingame Historical Society's meeting yesterday. The stories ranged from one gentlemen's experience serving legal papers on Seabiscuit's owner, Charles Howard, another who rode Seasbiscuit as a young girl and at that time wasn't very impressed with the horse and another who lived on the Howard estate and still owns orchids from the grounds.

These stories were topped off with beautiful paintings given to the owner by Mr. and Mrs. Howard. So many interesting memories …

  • Well are they going to drop their appeal with the City, or are they not? Are they going to walk away and punish us with the present dirty ol' store just as they punished us with closing off the parking lot. Why are the Planning Commissioners having to waste their time looking at the EIR+ again – they rejected it 6 to 1? There will be a Planning Commission meeting on December 8th to discuss Safeway's tired old Plan A EIR unless Safeway withdraws its appeal. Wouldn't it be nice if Safeway had been listening to the residents all along and did have a Plan B up their sleeves. Or maybe Plan B could be that Safeway sells the land to Whole Foods!

  • Did you all receive the beautiful invite from the City of Burlingame for Monday, November 17th at 7:00 for the swearing in of Terry and the installation of Vice Mayor Rosalie to Mayor. We all know Terry will get things done and Rosalie will bring some sense of decorum, integrity and fair play to the machinations of the Burlingame City Council. An air of civility would be nice too!

  • Why is this town wasting gas and polluting the air driving police cars around our shopping districts. They should be on bikes on the Broadway and Burlingame shopping districts.

The loud cars and motorcycles have destroyed the environment in these areas. Every single shop owner will admit to this as well.

Get out of your car and start riding bikes around these areas. Burlingame has way too many police officers standing visiting while loud cars and motorcycles pollute the city. Just stand on the corner of Burlingame at Lorton or Broadway in the middle of the block to hear the noise.

  • After reading Bud Harrison's comments in an article in one of our local newspapers, following Terry Nagel's ousting of Mary Janney from City Council, I am confused.
Harrison stated that this was the dirtiest campaign? and the only thing that they (the challengers) could do was attack and create negativism.? But, a recent article entitled Burlingame Candidates Need Training in Campaign Tactics,? questioned Coffey and Janney's dirty politics? and their flyer which promoted information that was false.? The final paragraph of the article states that politics is a dirty sport? and Burlingame shouldn't be sullied by those willing to run a smear campaign.?
I know that Halloween is over, but it seems that some of those presently in City Hall and their pals have been painting their faces green and stirring up the pot for many months. Harrison states that the election of Nagel will come down on the shoulders of the present vice mayor.? I remain confused, Mr. Harrison. Who is doing the attacking and creating negativism?

  • In today's San Mateo County Times Mike Coffey blamed the defeat of fellow councilmember Mary Janney on voter apathy and low turn out because 'too many people took for granted that the city was in great shape, so they didn't go out and vote.'

Hmmm … nice idea, but it's a pity the pesky facts don't support that Mike. Let's do the math: In 1999 there were 9,231 votes cast vs 9,030 this time. That's a drop of 2%. In 1999 you polled 2,295 vs 2,034 this time. Mary polled 2,622 vs 1,808 this time. So the happy & content non-voters could account for about 46 of the 261 votes you dropped this time, and 52 of the 814 that Mary dropped. Voter apathy doesn't account for the other 977 votes that went elsewhere. Do you think there might be some other reasons?

  • Here are the preliminary final results (we still wait for last minute absentee votes):

    TERRY NAGEL 2,413 26.72%
    MIKE COFFEY 2,034 22.52%

    RUSS COHEN 1,862 20.62%
    MARY JANNEY 1,808 20.02%
    DAN E. ANDERSEN 653 7.23%
    PAUL PRENDIVILLE 260 2.88%

The first analysis says that the Nagel/Cohen vote (4,275) vs Coffey/Janney (3,896) shows that this isn't a vocal minority, but a vocal majority. Congratulations to first time challenger Terry for a great campaign. Well done Russ for raising the level of debate above the trivial 'number of years served' to vision and leadership.
What would have been the result if Andersen hadn't been in the race?
