Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

Typically improvements in infrastructure for bicycles and pedestrians are obtained by regional grants. The San Mateo Transit Authority (TA) on which two of our local community members sit (with voting rights) has a call for projects with a deadline coming up very soon. This is a matching grant and will be judged using a number of criteria, ranging from connectivity to public transit, to sustainability, and serving an underserved community (ie. those who cannot afford a car, and bike to service jobs in Burlingame) etc.

The Public Works Dept., working with an advisory committee of Burlingame cyclists and pedestrians (B/PAC) is applying for such a grant to study a project— it is a Class II or better bike “facility” that will run between Murchison Drive to the north and Douglas Avenue in our downtown area. Currently, there are Stenciled “Sharrows” (meaning, the bikes and the cars are supposed to share the road (Class III) but striping a lane meant uniquely for the use of bike riders is generally seen as safer, particularly when children are riding.

It is very important in the judging phase of the grant that said projects have community support via written letters. These are relatively easy letters to write and a PDF from the city’s public works department shows the essential bullet points to include in the letter.

● Safer facility for all users (recreational bicyclists, commuters, students, etc.)
● Impacts to the underserved community
● Air quality concerns
● Impacts to local retail businesses
● Proximity to transit stations

The letters of support need to be completed and e-mailed to Andrew Wong in the Public Works Dept. of Burlingame at  awong@burlingame.org ASAP. The deadline is this Thursday, December 16th. If we are able to show the study for design of the project has strong potential and support via the letters there is a good chance we will receive funding. Please consider sending a letter of support now.

Thanks for posting, Joe. This could help “pave” the way for the long awaited bike link between our two downtowns: Burlingame Ave. and Broadway. Please consider writing a letter of support and sending it to Andrew Wong,
Public Works: awong@burlingame.org by this Thursday!!

Burlingame is only 3 miles across and many trips are nearly as fast as driving after you take into account the time to find parking (Ray Park to Burlingame Avenue is 14 minutes on a bike versus 8 minutes in a car according to Google Maps). We need a safe and direct bike route so that more people feel comfortable riding their bike downtown or commuting via BART.
I used to ride California Drive regularly as part of my commute and it is pretty scary. Northbound is fine because there is plenty of space with the sharrows, but Southbound is problematic because of the parked cars and having to merge back into the lane. I have started going 1.5 miles out of my way for a safer route along the Bay.
New York, SF, and Palo Alto have shown that you can really increase bicycle use when you have infrastructure that helps people feel safe on thei bicycles. In Palo Alto nearly 50% of middle schoolers bike to school. A lot of people I know really would like to bike more and having good infrastructure can help make it happen. I hope that you will take the time to write a quick letter of Support for this grant.

I created a letter template that people can use to quickly put together a letter:

  4. If you drive on California Dr or elsewhere in Burlingame, you’ll want to support this. It’ll mean you wouldn’t be stuck behind a bicyclist riding down the middle of the road because she doesn’t have a choice. There’s no bike lane to make them get out of your way. So whether you drive a BMW, an Audi, Ferrari or a Trek, this is a good thing.

Thanks Chris… Deadline is TODAY to send to Public Works, Andrew Wong: awong@burlingame.org
