Campaign Bucks to Date

To save at least a couple bloggers the work of going to the city webpage for campaign spending, here is my recap of where the bucks are flowing up to October 19 when this reporting period closed.   Like before, not every filing appears to be correct regarding loans vs. contributions, but rather than pass judgment on that (again), I have just calculated my estimate of loans as a percent of total contributions.  Here are the numbers rounded to the nearest dollar in the order they appear on the city site:

The last filing period doesn't close until December 31st when we will see the full total expenditures.  I can see from my mailbox that Ricardo Ortiz must still have some postage expense to report.  Schinagl hasn't filed yet.  So the total spent to date is $111,321 and the top spending campaign (Peceimer's) accounts for 41% of the total.  Don't forget to vote on Tuesday!

    Joe,
    Thanks for summarizing this for fellow Burlingamers, and sorry that we didn’t get a chance to talk more at the Cigar Dinner.
    I will say that I have spent my time introducing myself to folks on Burlingame Ave and Broadway Ave, and I have never asked people for contributions in person or on the phone, as most of the candidates have.
    I also never ordered yard signs because I’m running to represent The Renters of Burlingame (51% of our town) that have no representation on City Council today – and most of us do not have a yard. So, instead, I personally distributed 5,000 door hangers to the apartments while chatting with dozens of folks on the way.
    I’m also running to:
    1) Stand up against the conflicts of interest on the existing city council and planning commission (see my Facebook campaign page for full details),
    2) Encourage Healthy Budget Surpluses to,
    3) Pay Down Our Massive Debts, and
    4) Ensure Strong Schools.
    Please vote for me on this Tuesday, November 5th. Your Absentee Ballot must arrive by Tuesday, so you should just bring it to City Hall or your Polling Place at this point.

    Alex, I have never actually been to a cigar dinner including recently, so the reason we didn’t get to talk more is because we never actually talked at all. Who might you have thought was me?

    I said hello to you on the 2nd floor of the cigar dinner organized by Burlingame Tobaconist in Monday, October 28th. I asked the organizer, “Joe Baylock is a cigar guy?” And the organizer said, “Oh yeah.”
    It’s OK Burlingame. Balance is everything.
    Joe, if somehow I misunderstood, would you like to join me for a cigar this week?

    Alex, you said hello to someone else, not me. On Oct. 28th I was at the Roti Grand Opening in San Mateo hanging out with Sunny. I don’t know where the cigar dinner was and did not attend. Haven’t been into the Avenew tobacconist in a few years. I know it sometimes seems like I am everywhere and hear everything, but it ain’t so 🙂

    Political intrigue, back room-smoke filled rooms, where the Real Power Brokers that run our “little town”…
    Illuminatti, Bohemiam Grove, The Burlingame Historical Society?
    Could Mr.Kent be the victim of a smear campaign?

    Can’t wait to divide the amount spent by each candidate by the number of votes they got- I bet we’ll see some of the candidates grossly ‘overpaid’ for their votes
    Holyroler, this isn’t Gotham City, this is Burlingame. Joe, I think you need to write an article on Burlingame Noir City Confidential: where ambition, corruption, deceit, and desire is hidden under a facade of streetscapes, mass transit condos, parking garages and 4000 sq foot McMansions.

    I’m with you on this one, Mark. For sure, some of the candidates grossly ‘overpaid’ for their votes. Aside from those who spent a less than a few thousand, I’ve got a good guess who’s spent the least. I’m sure I know who’s spent the most!

    I agree–‘nice to have quite a few newcomers to the BV. The purpose of this blog (I think) is to inform, but also to be a clearing house for the vetting of different ideas to make this city a better place. Everyone has a right to their opinion about how to get there, candidate, or not.
    At the end of the day, there are no “bad” ideas…..

    I am still voting for Kent.
    I have seen him talking to people @ Broadway.
    His last comments on this site showed his innosense, and compassion to do what is right for the community.
    Kent does not seem beholden to any group of special interest people either.
    I like his position of attempting to get the people who rent homes in Burlingame to vote too.
    Good Luck Mr. Kent…
    You have worked very hard. Whatever the outcome is, The City of Burlingame is better off because you cared.

    Andy Warhol, think of the Burlingame Voice as Warhol’s famous “the Factory”, where artists of various backgrounds come together and share perspectives. Agree or disagree with Mr. Kent or his somewhat antagonistic approach-which he can grow out of next time he runs for council– he actually brought forth a few things to light including the conflicts of interest in city government and how school funding works, including making calls to the county to get some perspectives. Joe could have easily shut him down particularly as he and Russ Cohen run the Burlingame Voice and gave a competitor free publicity, but they decided to actually let him post, which I think speaks volumes to the ethics of Joe and Mr. Cohen. Perfect example of actions speaking louder than words. So I would encourage Mr Kent to keep contributing-in a constructive way- and add to the layers of the silkscreen that you purport to value so much.

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
    My #1 recommendation for The Burlingame Voice is to require that people use their actual identity.
    It’s too bad that neither the newspaper editors nor residents of Burlingame CARE whether our town is being misled via conflicts of interests, which are obvious and well documented.
    I am very glad that Michael Brownrigg was reelected, he is our MVP. Ann is charismatic and sharp, but I’d like to see her stop getting paid by Unions to represent their interests instead of the residents which just reelected her (per her admission to me in front of most of the city council last year).
    I’d like to see Burlingame implement term limits of 2 x 4 year terms on city council as well, especially as such as small number of residents follow the elections or bother to vote. I’ll wait to congratulate the 3rd when all the votes are made official.
    “Andy Warhol”, as I’ve dedicated the last several years of my life to helping public and private schools, churches and synagogues and other non profits to be more successful (while turning down corporate job offers), I think that you’re very misinformed.
    I also served 5 consecutive terms on the LumITy Board of Governors, which provides pro-bono tech training and consulting to hundreds of other non profits, and was also appointed to the Chicago Public Schools Tech Steering Committee. I’m not sure how my life is “insignificant”, per your uplifting statement above.

    My family and I have really enjoyed the last 6 1/2 years of living in Burlingame, and we look forward to getting to know the community better as we continue to volunteer, and donate, and work, and learn and live here.
    Democracy only works if the people show up.

    “I’d like to see more public debates among very astute folks on each side of major issues in California and locally. We have such Group Think and encouragement to slander those that question the majority beliefs… It’s really contrary to the spirit of innovation and it’s contrary to serving the public in the Fiduciary leader role that politicians and clandestine politicians must rediscover for our state and cities to survive financially and ethically.”

    Question for the Peceimer boosters: where did all his money go? I don’t recall seeing many yard signs or ads? He would have been much better off handing $50 bills to people when you divide what he spent by the number of votes he got–yes I know that’s illegal but proves the point that whatever he spent his money on had every little return on investment. Hopefully his commercial property projects fare a little–or a lot better, because seems like a bunch of wasted capital–granted its his own money, but he would have much been better off saving that money and buying a Tesla, which come to think of it is the perfect car for a libertarian such as himself!
    I still say the mic grabbing incident at the debates, ridiculous gas station sign publicity, and the asinine comments about firefighters not being heroes cost him votes and probably a lot. Come to think of it he said a few weird things in the debate too. And to think all of those decisions were basically costless in terms of needing to spend money. Was extremely obvious to me and I stated so several times in prior posts, but understand those who know and like him may not think all that stuff was a big deal, but turns out it actually was.

  21. Group-Think-R-Us

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
    If you ever run for a public office in San Mateo County, you’ll realize that the code of ethics that we signed states:
    (1) “I shall conduct my campaign openly and publicly, discussing the issues as I see them, presenting my record and policies with sincerity and frankness, and Criticizing Without Fear or favor the record and policies of my opponents and political parties which merit such criticism.”
    It further states:
    “(2) I shall not use or permit the use of character defamation, whispering campaigns, liberal, slander or scurrilous attacks on any candidate or his or her personal or family life…”
    So the rules of the public election process both encourage honest criticism of other candidates, without breaking the law by making knowingly false statements.
    For the record, I HAVE followed the code of ethics in all of my statements.
    My statements are not slander/liable if they are true and if the incident (Ann and Jerry speaking) was stated in front of several witnesses (City Council members), including me and on video. I’ve detailed the full incident description on my Facebook campaign page for weeks.
    It’s true, 98% of Burlingame voters feel comfortable with or were not aware of these conflicts of interest.
    It’s the past conflicts of interest on City Council that have mostly caused major problems for our town like $73M in unfunded health care liabilities (5 years of service => free health care for life for you and your spouse).

    Nice to see my ‘groupthink’ catch-phrase seems to have caught on to this website so much that some are incorporating it in their usernames! Once again, I am flattered!
    I don’t think that Russ Cohen being essentially tied for number 3 is exactly consensus ‘groupthink’ among burlingame voters..would ask the current council members what they think of that and you’d get a different answer. Next election cycle may be another story as this race has brought out some interesting views from the community and candidates that you didn’t see in elections past. May be a dumb question but why are most municipal elections held in odd numbered years which have the lowest voter turnout? Only seems to protect incumbency. Why not have them on the same years as national or state legislative elections, which would help get voter turnout and save costs and volunteer hours in manning the polls?
