I missed the Thursday Daily Post article on Andrew Peceimer's sign placement contract due to being out of town, but given all of the talk around town about it, I had to go find a copy.  Put this post in the category of just plain fun since I have absolutely no problem with any candidate paying to have their sign hosted on a business or residence so long as the expense is reported properly and the total square footage at the location is within code.  The fun part for me was the negotiation being listed in the such detail.  Steven Yeh owns the Beacon and Valero gas stations on B'way.  The Peceimer-Yeh negotiations went like this according to the article

Peceimer said he went back another day and offered him $2 a day for a sign at each station until the election and Yeh declined the offer.  Yeh made a counteroffer of $10 a day, which Peiceimer said was too expensive.  The two settled on $5 a day, although Peiceimer admitted that he would have gone as high as $7 a day.

A word to the wise, the next time Andrew runs he better be prepared to pay the 7 bucks!  Here's one of the signs

    Three letters for you: W-O-W. Responsible leadership manifested in back and forth negotiating with out of town gas station owners at crazy rates? Either too much time on his hands or desperate times requires measures. Probably gets less than 10 votes out of that. Funny thing is if he had not tried to be so fond of grabbing the tied down microphone during his opening debate comment, he probably would have not lost 50 votes–and to think that would have been actually been a zero cost.

    The gas station sign issue is completely amusing, not because of the issue itself, but how incapable people seem to be able to understand it is “advertising.” The signs are obviously not typical yard signs, there does not appear to have been any payment for yard signs at homes or other businesses. Advertising is a regular part of politics. How is what he did any different than ads in the paper, radio or TV (albeit in bigger elections.) A US Senate candidate bought a billboard off the San Mateo bridge in 2010, I saw an ad for a candidacy on that electronic sign in Redwood City area on 101 in the last Gov. election… driving to the South Bay you can also see a “Vote for Greg Conlon for Atherton City Council” sign from 101 on someone’s business billboard. (Sorry don’t remember what biz it is.) And for what its worth, I would personally never vote for anyone because of sign placement be it advertising or a yard sign. However…there is no question it helps with name recognition which based on his own words appeared to be a reason Peceimer did it. The Keighran quote about not paying for yard signs and the follow up comments on this issue (minus what appeared to have been an error with the reporting address) sounds like nothing more than people upset that a candidate has money to spend on his election and is doing just that. I would not have made the $7 comment myself, and while it is fair to say the signs likely don’t earn many votes, they certainly help him with name recognition.
    Millbrae- I see a lot of Ratke signs, nice to see a newcomer doing well.
