The B'game Community Garden at Bayside Park had its Grand Opening yesterday. I couldn't make it, but local John McQuaide was kind enough to forward a great shot he took of the planter beds so we can all see how beautiful the set-up is. John's wife, Leslie, has been the driving force behind this accomplishment for the past six years. I predict some good eats for all involved!
My daughter and her family belong to a Community Garden @ Octavia/Cole Street in SF.
The first thing I noticed was that these “plots” are waist level. That make it so much more available to older people,that may have trouble getting on their knees, or bending over….
The Rec and Park Dept thought of everything!
Another reason to live in Burlingame!
I doubt if I will ever plant anything there. Nevertheless, it is a GREAT place to visit and contemplate what all of us can do in our own backyards.

This project turned out really beautifully– congratulations Leslie! You sure worked a long time on this one and it couldn’t have turned out better. Beautiful handiwork by the Parks dept. who did the work ‘in-house’, just like the bocce courts, and landscaped it all beautifully.
Just a note to those who may park in these areas, and also park at the Bay Trail entrance across the street: Car burglaries are actively happening during the weekdays in these areas. There is a police blotter report this week about someone having their purse stolen from their car during a walk. Ladies remember to lock up your purse in the trunk, or somewhere out of sight !
I would feel better if the gardens had a lockable fence around them like the nearby enclosed sports areas. This would not be necesary if the gardens were in the heart of BG such as near the Library etc.

The Burlingame Parks and Recreation Department is proud to announce that just after opening our community garden on September 13th we have been able to donate over 50 pounds of produce to Call Primrose House in Burlingame. At Thanksgiving, the garden donated 30 pounds of vegetables including beets, kale, Swiss chard, parsnips and lettuce. Then again in December, we donated about 20 pounds of assorted vegetables.
