Bocce court opening

Back in the day, Washington Park had two bocce ball courts. they were built by the Burlingame Lions Club. Over the years, however, the sport became less and less popular and the courts disappeared. Seems it is making a comeback, at least here in Burlingame. Burlingame Parks Department folks put some hard labor against buildng three new courts and relocating the courts of another sport of yesteryear, horsehoes. The grand opening celebration was held yesterday, with a crowd mostly of dignitaries and parks staff with a few neighbors, ( myself included.)

  1. I was surprized that the Park Dept provides the R&D, as well as installation of such an impressive project.
I know nothing about Bocce Ball.
However, I do know that the site looks beautiful.
    Mr. Disco deserves kudos.
    Park Dept employees too.

Ditto to that, what a beautiful installation, including two wood and tile chess tables, made by Mike in Parks. I can’t wait to see it when the vines and flowers are all grown in. Great job!

  3. Thanks Mike!
J could you please point him out in the photo.
    He did an exceptional job.
It is really good to know that we-Burlingame have such commited and skilled employees.
I bet Mike’s co workers are just as good.
The park dept workers are the behind the scene, un-noticed, who provide the things that people who use the Parks never think about.
    I LIKE MIKE!

Beautiful! Very nice, would like to visit soon.
Would like to know if we can bring vino to the park. I was told no that it is against Burlingame Park rules however I see a bottle in the photo (on the the table bench). Need to drink vino when palying bocce. ciao.

  5. My understanding of bringing “party supplies” to Washington Park is that it is OK, if you don’t go crazy.
I always see Beer and Wine consumed during “Concert in the Park” events by many people.
I am sure the Park Dept management would not bring bottles of Wine to the Bocce Ball Opening& Political Photo event without the, Mayor and City Elders endorsing the Cutural importance of Vino, Latin Culture, and Bocce.
I really would like to see a “Blessing” preformed by a Catholic Priest done at the courts to ensure good times, and coming together of our community, as well as culture.
    Prego, Prego!

Tere are actually two bottles int eh picture, one is in a purse on a bench.
I learned that there is signage posted in teh park that alcohol is prohibited. There is a municipal code against alcohol in public as well as all parks in Burlingame except for the golf course!

  7. Joe

Neither bottle was open. It was 11am so that isn’t TOO surprising. I’m pretty sure the park is no alcohol all the time, but perhaps BPD will weigh in here on the “bocce exception”? 🙂

  8. Erik

“break the seal on the bottle no use on the shelf” – chuck prophet
so weimax should be a sponsor and work something out with park and rec to allow wine to be consumed with the purchase of the bocce rental, this could be a sales source for weimax as well as exposure to the bgame community…
so how lenient are the police? do they give warnings?
what if I called the police dept halfway through the next Washington park Sunday concert and told them that people are drinking in the park? would they walk through the crowd and cite people?
does bgame pd monitor the bgame voice?

They are going to allow or make an exception for alcohol at the bocce ball courts. We were told that last night at our Park and Rec Commission meeting. Kudo’s to the Parks Department for such a wonderful addition to Washington Park.
I walked by on Fathers Day and there were lines of people waiting to use the courts. Don’t forgot that you can reserve the courts for parties and events.

  10. Wine, Beer, Salami, or just surly little old Italian Bocce Players..
A beautiful project and a “Feather in the Cap” for the Burlingame Park Dept.
    Thank you Mr. Disco!

  11. kelly

Bravo! Bravo!are there meeting minutes from the 6/20 Park and Rec Commission meeting that state this? are the minutes public?

  12. Dino

    vino prosciutto parmigiano
    very nice, beautiful
    prego prego

  13. I walk my little dog around Washington Park(on lead) at least once a day.
I am disappointed not seeing anyone using the Bocce Ball Courts.
I see people using the picnic tables.
    Looks Fun.
I have seen newspaper advertisments in the local newspapers asking the community to enjoy the City of Burlingame Parks, and Recreation Dept.
What about the Bocce Ball Courts?
When people become aware of the sport, see the people gathered at “World Class Court/s( I think) to enjoy a unique experience, it will create an interest to explore all the good things about Burlingame.
In paticular, the many “Hidden Gems.”
    Plus…
Raise the tax base, and overall property value too.
I am aware of the City of Burlingames concern that the facilities available will bring in “outsiders.”
I would say do not worry about “them” until something happens.
    FYI
Basketball Courts having only one Hoop.
    (Racial Overtones)
No signage to, or ability to access through a City of Burlingame web site:
    Cuernavca Park
    Mills Canyon
Access to the hidden stairways, and easements above El Camino Real that meander through out the neighborhood
    Washington Park
    The Dog Park
    Tennis Courts
    Soccer Fields
    The Golf Center
    Bike Paths
    The Recreation Center
Seriously, give this list some thought.
I look forward for anyone to deny this casual/obvious observation.
    I am not complaining..
    Just stating the facts.
    Something just seems wrong.
Sooner or later it will “Bite The City of Burlingame in the Butt.

  14. Anne

Wow, Holy, this most recent stream of consciousness was exceptionally hard to follow.

  15. jennifer

Good to know, because maybe people like me who have never played Bocce and who don’t want to make complete fools out of themselves with somebody looking, can go give it a try. Thanks for the hot tip.
I haven’t seen a rec. guide for the summer or fall, but maybe there are or will be classes or organized teams that will take advantage of the new bocce or horseshoe crts. I’m sure it is just a matter of time before people “discover” they are there. When my kids were little, I always hoped for croquet tournaments at the park, too. The other day I actually saw a bunch of families playing croquet- ‘brought back memories of summer fun.

  16. Always glad to know you still care, Anne.
I just belive that The City of Burlingame has so many “hidden gems,” without the City Elders/Public Servants getting the information out, people who have lived here all their life do not know what great things are “right next door.”

  17. Anne

And “racial overtones” fits in where?

  18. Well…
Basketball is a 10 person sport. Full Court.
The weather, and pristine up keep of the Burlingame Parks were bringing large groups of men to Victoria, Curnavaca, Ray Park in the late 80’s-early 90’s.
At that time, my husband was serving on a “community board” that is still active, to come up with a solution to address the issue.
Simple, get rid of one Basketball Standard.
    It worked.
    Anne,you reeled me in..again.
    Any other questions?
    PS
    Happy 4th of July.
