The financial troubles of the U.S. Postal Service have been covered in the Journal at some length.  Now USPS officials are saying that at least some of the main PO between Park Rd and Lorton Ave. will be put up for sale for around 5 mil.  There's a nice lawn and plenty of parking as well as room to sublet in the building itself–but don't we need a Post Office there?  Plus there are historic aspect to the building which mean changes to it may not be easy to make.

The video feed on my computer didn’t work very well, but I did read the staff report on this, and it was discouraging. If I understood it, municipalities no longer get priority treatment on this type of sale, as was the case up to 2007. ‘sounds like there could be some heavy bidding on it and our only pawn is parking that we own next to it. I guess some bits and pieces are better than nothing, and could be traded later. The Downtown plan had envisioned some type of open space for the public, daylighting the creek, or at least mimicking a creek with a water feature. A parking swap was also discussed so that the parcel shape would become more usable. The PO building could have been used for a variety of purposes–the main excitement came from the concept of a ‘black box’ type of entertainment venue- “flexible space” that is sorely lacking for various types of events — the hope being that it could at least be self sustaining. This one will be a challenge, but one where we hopefully have our players in the ring. It is too important of a property to let go that easily.

I read in the Palo Alto Daily Post that the council is considering closing Park Road between Howard and Burlingame Avenues permanently. That is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard. If you want a public space buy this building and the lot.
If you close Park Road you will screw up traffic and parking in the whole downtown area. Also, with Safeway coming back better than ever and Five Guys Burgers moving in soon, the traffic is going to increase significantly.

While you may not be able to change the exterior, you may be able to change interior. In Davis, CA, the old City Hall was converted into Bistro 33.

The Post office lawn would be a great location for the farmers market (which would open up the streets) or a central location for other Burlingame events. It would also open up traffic and trade which is now divided by a parking lot and a post office.
With some imagination and planning, this opportunity could help Burlingame centralize its flow of pedestrian traffic and bring more business to the city.

Instead of the same ole stuff that makes people feel good about themselves without serving any real purpose lets create something that generates jobs in Burlingame. Keep the far left crazies who have destroyed CA by bankrupting it out of this project for once.
As for the farmers market..the prices are exorbiant compared to the Burlingame Produce. Safeway (coming) and Mollie Stones.
Why are you supporting the vendors in that market for anyway rather than Burlingame businesses?? DAAAA

ThePO has some really cool features; bronze trim, marble walls/flooring–just a really interesting 1940s vibe when you walk around it. Love the old tiles made by school kids. Let’s not regentrify it into some type of useable blandness. Keep it quaint.
    PS
Park Rd should at least be one way only–city needs to focus on walkability.

The Farmers Market needs to move to the Post Office Parking Lot.
The FM in the street is too narrow and cuts off traffic through Bgame. The argument that the use of the parking lot will anger merchants is bogus. The loss of spaces in the lot is offset by the gain of spaces on Park Rd and will free up parking spaces AND traffic flow on Park Rd. This will allow traffic to flow through Burlingame and people can walk through the Farmer’s Market. The movement of the FM to the Post Office parkeing lot will also create a walking flow from Park Road to Lorton and increase business Burlingame.
