Blogger Fred notes

It wasn't quite the Burlingame institution it used to be, but it is worth noting that the Burlingame Avenue Smoke Shop is closed. The building has been sold and the smoke shop is no more.

To which Blogger Jennifer replies

Ah, too bad. It certainly was a nice hang-out for us kids for many decades.

We thought such a passing deserved its own thread.  With the split off of the cigar shop as a pure smokers' paradise, the old Smoke Shop lost a bit of cachet.

I had a nice Romeo y Julieta corona after dinner tonight in honor of the Smoke Shop’s demise. The real smoke shop is still open two doors up from the corner, but there is definitely somthing special about that corner location.
Thanks for the tip, Fred. If you would like to get together and compare notes on how the Avenew is evolving, or anything else in town, drop me an email a joe@baylock.com. Would love to meet you.

Thanks. The saddest part of this story, for me anyways, is what almost was.
Before the current owner was running the smoke shop, two brothers were going to open up a restaurant on that corner space. Their plan was to open a Chicago hot dog and Italian beef stand. The brothers are old school Italian cooks. They had secured the lease and had made arrangements with wholesalers back in Chicago to overnight the supplies necessary to make authentic Chicago dogs and Italian beef sandwiches.
Unfortunately, their hopes were dashed by the food establishment moratorium on Burlingame Avenue. One of the brothers still works in Burlingame and will let you know what his experience with the city was.
I’d trade three frozen yogurt stands for one authentic Italian beef with hot giardiniera and sweet peppers.
I think I’m gonna go cry into a bowl of soup at Copenhagen…
