Fixing the Avenue

The New Year seems like a good time to review hopes and dreams for renewing B'game Avenue.  The City Council held a study session on the topic back on Dec. 6th that was a fact-filled survey of the situation including:

The water main on Burlingame Ave. consists of 4" diameter cast iron installed in 1908.  It is a top priority for replacement since it has inadequate capacity for fire flow pressure.

The Pavement Condition Index is 49; below the City standard average of 77 on a scale of 0 to 100 where 100 represents a brand new street.

Lack of landscape system and irrigation system.

There are a total of 25 parking lots in the downtown districts.  Preventative maintenance on these parking lots is deferred due to a lack of dedicated funding sources.

Cost estimates for fixing all of this are:

Water and sewer pipeline infrastructure        $3.5 million

Roadway repairs and resurfacing                    $0.5 million

Streetscape improvements                            $9.5 million

Total                                                            $13.5 million

We will look at the funding alternatives in the next post.

    Yes, I am reading those threads too. I was more trying to infer the point that the good citizens of Burlingame will be able to pay for a lot of street repair when our leaders finally renegotiate the grossly unfair burden that the retired and retiring city workers are demanding from us.
    If the only way to get out of this is to declare insolvency, so be it. It was destined to be when the city management promised themselves and their employees all those nice benefits (far in excess of private industry) a long time ago. Hellloww?…

    So Mr. Fulderon, what is your source regarding private industry benefits vs. City of Burlingame.
    Lets take for example-Private Fire Dept.vs Public Fire Dept.
    Or City of Burlingame Financial Director, Jesus Nava vs. Wall Street Bernie Maddoff.
    Please let us know about the differences.

    Free food, medical, vision,dental, clothing, entertainment.
    Mr Fulerton,
    Why would deny the people who maintain your lifestyle in Burlingame the same benfits that you support of your taxpayer dollars for a criminal?

    I actually don’t support those benefits for convicted criminals either. The prison system should pay for itself, and if that is not possible it should be outsourced to China and be run for $1K a year per prisoner rather than $30K (or whatever it currently is).
    We need solutions to the budget problems. Have I heard any from you, HR? How do you suggest we pay for the happy system you support?
