The SM Daily Journal has a little reminder article about the change of garbage companies to Recology that we have been following.  The nugget in the piece is the reminder that

Recology will also collect recyclables and compost weekly, as opposed to the current system of every other week.

Good thing since the blue bins seem to be filling up early in the cycle.  Also don't forget if you have more than one compost bin they need to have a good amount of space between them so the automatic arm works properly.

We recycle all paper, plastic and bottles and I find that the blue bin does not fill up every two weeks. I consider the move to once a week simply a rationale for increasing rates.

And in today’s Examiner the story “Trash collector taking larger cut” reports
“The biggest change – and a major reason for the higher costs – is a new weekly schedule for recyling and compost, which had been picked up every other week under previous collector Allied Waste.”
It’s a convenience for people not smart enough to figure out or keep track of which week the recycling comes, so now they can put it out every week and not have to think. Nice. So now we will all just need to pay more. 14% more.

This is really just part of a much larger problem– the tendency to “over-package” everything manufactured. I’d hope that in due time, industry will stop packing everything in multiple layers of hard plastic, many times larger than the actual article. If we were “smarter” about this stuff, we wouldn’t need to worry about not fitting everything into whatever container is deemed appropriate for Recology. The plastics’ industry would likely fight scaling back, but this needs to be done ASAP- it has become truly obscene.

The Mercury Times’ Insider is reporting that:
When bad news hit, Recology San Mateo County called in PR pros Singer Associates to sing a happy tune.
“It was an imperfect week, and we’re a company that shoots for perfection,” Singer Associates VP Adam Alberti said Monday on behalf of Recology. “So we’re trying to get better each and every day.”
Singer was referring to Recology’s missteps in taking over the garbage- and recycling-collection contract Jan. 3 from Allied Waste for nearly a dozen cities from Burlingame to East Palo Alto.
The first week of the transition was plagued by missed and late pickups, leading to thousands of customer complaints.
Singer Associates is the firm that represented Bay Meadows Land, aka Stockbridge Capital Partners, in the final years of Bay Meadows racetrack. It told us how great Bay Meadows Phase II would be once the historic track was torn down in 2008.
Of course, two years after the Bay Meadows grandstand kissed the wrecking ball, the former track is still a vacant dirt lot.
The residential and commercial development is well behind schedule because of the poor economy.
Incidentally, Singer Associates is responsible for Recology’s name.
The firm helped Norcal Waste Systems come up with its new, friendlier moniker in 2009.

Actually we do fill up our blue bin every week and are happy it is being picked up weekly now. We’re hoping to reduce the amount of stuff in our black bin! yay.
