The Mercury Times article over the weekend reminded me of the rooster that used to live in our neighborhood. He did what roosters do every morning and he must have been grandfathered in since my understanding of the current ordinance is hens are allowed, but roosters are not. Per the Times
On Tuesday, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will consider amending an ordinance that now prohibits poultry in residential neighborhoods — a response to the increasing popularity of urban chicken farming.
That is just for the unincorporated parts of the county like the top of Hillside or Adeline.
After reviewing the regulations in Peninsula cities and finding most allow limited domestic poultry, county staff asked the planning commission to change the zoning ordinance to allow chickens and ducks. The planning commission not only agreed but also went a step further by allowing more poultry than recommended by staff and reducing the minimum space required to keep them.
Here is an example of a new coop in town that hasn't gotten its hens yet. Stylish!
