Street Art on Primrose and at Mills

By popular demand here is a new photo showing the additions to the Pegasus statue on Primrose Ave.  Thanks for the 53 comments and counting.  Yes, I do know that it's not Pegasus since the wings are on the woman, not the horse but the name has stuck around town.

At the Saturday joint City Council and Planning Commission meeting some direction was given to staff and the Commission to investigate putting some restrictions in place for street art.  The direction did not go down the censorship dead end, but rather focused on size, height and setback.

On another street art note, Mills-Peninsula Hospital is looking for public input on which piece of art to put on the corner of the new hospital property.  If you go into the Main Library you will see three perspectives each on two pieces of art.  They are seeking comment on whether you prefer "The Muse and the Listener" or "Ode to Joy".  I'm glad they are asking.  Here is the display, but you should go in for a full view.

    Maybe the name Pegasus “stuck” in your circle around town…but it’s not the whole town…call it corrrectly since you know it’s Angel on a Horse. Geez, break out of your insulation.

    I have talked to many people about this aparition and there is not a single one that likes it. The strong dislike trascneds race, age and socioeconomics. If you think there is any segment of Burlingame residents that finds this a well placed, beautiful piece of art, you are the one that is insulated.

    Well, just to be contrarian I have to admit that I don’t have any problem with it. It isn’t fine art but what the heck.

    I and my friends like it very much….though do wish there was more room to show it off…the placement is fine. I work in the area, shop in the area…as do my friends who also like it. I live close enough by in Burlingame, and am active in the community. I am not insulated. There are 28,000 or so folks here, and a handful (Historical Society and their glob ons) that refer to it by improper name.
    Or, shall we rename the Gloria Barton statue “Hans Solo”?

    Would you have this type of “Art” in front of your house?
    Living in a community should/has a certain bond between people and neighbors.
    Social Norms.
    I do not know who Gloria Barton is.
    I do know who Charles Manson/Adolph Hitler is.
    Is it appropriate for me to put a statue of Chuck Manson, or Adolph on my front lawn? Because I can?
    What if you were my nextdoor neighbor?
    Would you accept my right to do so?

    Chia, not sure why the reference to The Burlingame Historical Society. I am not aware of anyone representing The Society who has rendered an opinion about this display of public art.

    Yeah, it got a name, Old Guy. Angel on Horse. I am not Mr. Lo. And, yes, Holy, I would accept your right to do so, even if I didn’t like it. Can you say “I’m Eddie Cana”…(Americana)
    There’s some house over on Walnut or Newhall with bronze stuff out front that is icky to me…oh well…it’s there place. My house is pink. Oh well, it mine.

    This topic is becoming ridiculous.
    Let’s discuss the people who live in Burlingame-They employee “Nannies.”
    I have 3 children. They have children.
    How is it possible that anyone would allow an illegal-Non Documented Mexican, or Asian to push their babies around town?
    How do I know that those Latin&Asian women pushing WHITE BURLINGAME BABIES around are illegal? Neighbors..
    IT IS AN INDUSTRY!
    THE PEOPLE WHO HIRE SURROGATE PARENTS DEFINE THEIR CHILDREN AS COMMODITTES.
    That is OK with me.

    Got a note from a reader responding to an item in this space regarding that bit of stark, white statuary perched in front of an office building on Primrose Road in downtown Burlingame.
    According to this wag, the large object looks like the sort of depressing decoration one might find at a grave site in a Colma cemetery.
    That view seems to be shared by others. Within days of its appearance, the artwork was being shrouded in makeshift foliage, hastily brought in, apparently, to blunt the sight of the thing.
    Geez, art critics are everywhere.

    I have heard that “Ode to Joy” was the winning selection for the corner art at the new hospital–that would be the one with the birds. Great news in my opinion.
