Students from an after-school math and reading program in Burlingame have collected more than 140 new and gently used books for families in need. Kumon Math and Reading children gathered the books for the nonprofit Family Service Agency of San Mateo County's Early Learning Center, whose literacy program prepares preschool-age children for kindergarten and encourages parent participation.
"Most of the 400 children we serve each day have fewer than five books in their home and have yet to build reading into their recreational routine," said Holly Thorsen, Family Service's fund-development manager. "New books go a long way toward building literacy habits and an early appreciation for books."
Leizelle Paiso, a teacher at Kumon, felt proud seeing her students' effort. "The book drive provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to bring their love of learning and reading to other children," she said. "It's imperative that our children understand the importance of educating themselves and helping to educate others."
Many students donated their favorite books. Preston Lo, 8, gave away "The Cable Car and the Dragon.""I liked reading this book and thought other kids might enjoy it as well," he said.

May I suggest that the library has an on-going book sale which features gently used (and ex library) very reasonably priced books which would be great donations to such a good cause.
