Government Watch (Daily Journal)

The Burlingame City Council will consider enforcing a $100 annual business license tax, and potentially asking for three years of back payments on Monday. Concerns raised previously caused the council to delay the implementation of the ordinance.
The city is considering an audit to find out which businesses failed to pay the annual $100 tax for the current or three past years. The proposal calls for a 90-day amnesty period. During that time, a business that failed to pay could make good by paying $100 for each year and a $35 fee.
Costs escalate after the amnesty period. Penalties include a $25 fee for each year; a 5 percent penalty for every 15 days it is late capped at $100; 1 percent interest per month; and the penalty of cost recovery. It will cost about $1,530 for a business that had not paid its business license tax for the past four years and failed to pay during the amnesty period.
The council meets 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4 at City Hall, 501 Primrose Road.
