Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

Letters in the Daily Journal today:

Help wildlife by voting for Measure H – Don't mind polluting the Bay? Too expensive to replace Burlingame's sewer pipes? Tell it to the migratory birds! Tell it to the fish! Or do the right thing vote for Measure H on the Burlingame Ballot. Then take a walk along the shore and tell the fish and wildlife, You're welcome!? Aline Bier, Burlingame

Yes on Measure H – As I manned a phone bank to garner opinion and solicit votes for Measure H, the Burlingame flood control bond initiative which would add $30 per every $100,000 of assessed value to property tax, a recurring sentiment prompted me to write. But I'm just a renter. This doesn't really involve me.? Everyone who lives in Burlingame has a stake and a voice in how this community prospers, whether his monthly living expenses are paid with a rent check or a mortgage. If a first floor apartment is flooded, or the car is in water up to it's alternator in that underground garage the tenant has suffered no less personal property loss than a homeowner. When sewage is backed up onto our streets due to excessive rain water infiltration the public health issue is every resident's concern. In actual fact, Burlingame's residential rental population is the voter majority. No one wants to pay more taxes: property, sales, or gasoline. But quick Band-aid fixes will no longer suffice to keep our city above water. There are a lot of propositions on this November's ballot which ask for taxpayer financing of local and state infrastructure projects. All are worthy and necessary. However, if you find that your financial situation may only cover one project, please cast your ballot for the hometown measure. Vote yes on Measure H. Patricia Giorni, Burlingame

Burlingame needs Measure H – On Nov. 7, San Mateo County voters will have several bond measures from which to choose. For Burlingame, one, in particular, is of special importance. Measure H will fund basic repairs to our public buildings, as well as upgrade our obsolete storm drain system. As it is, the city wastes $2 million on Band-aid repairs that only last until the next rainy season. For a basic 3 percent flat tax of our assessed property values, we can finally stop throwing money literally down the drain each year. Proposing a bond measure is not something Burlingame leaders have done flippantly. In fact, the last ballot measure asking the voters to approve bond funding for City infrastructure improvements was 40 years ago. Enough is enough. Let's finally make basic repairs so that our city can renew its luster. Join me and a growing list of Burlingame residents in support of this very important measure. Jennifer Pfaff, Burlingame
