Signs of an Effective School Board Member
Here are signs of a school board member focused on moving the school district forward and educating all students to meet high standards:

  • Great school board members have a clear vision for the district.
They set the vision and goals, and measure the success of the district and superintendent against the goals.
  • Great school board members communicate their actions to the community.
Through public discourse and written reports, great school board members keep the public informed of the district's progress and challenges.
  • Great school board members work as a team.
They collaborate well with others and are respectful of the other board members and superintendent.
  • Great school board members adopt a fiscally sound district budget.
They pay attention to finances and regularly monitor the fiscal health of the district.

Signs of an Ineffective School Board Member
If you notice any of the following signs, it's time to find some new candidates to run for your local board:

  • The school board member continually focuses on one issue or talks aimlessly at meetings.
  • The school board member doesn't conduct him or herself in a respectful, collaborative manner in public.
  • The school board member comes to meetings unprepared.
  • The school board member rubber stamps? all the superintendent's proposals without asking hard questions.
  • The school board member micromanages rather than focusing attention on district-wide policies.
  • The school board member uses his position on the school board as an opportunity to put forth a political agenda with little relevance to student achievement.

I find this to be very interesting… Let’s start with the good signs so we can look at what the board (and Mr. Johnson) are NOT doing:

    GOOD SIGNS
    1. Clear vision for the district: a working budget perhaps?
    2. Keep the public informed: 3 years of deficit spending and we’re just finding out now.
    3. Work as a team: unless you’re one of the team of 6, you don’t matter to them.
    4. Fiscal responsibility: I don’t even know what to say about this, except that in our distric, it’s a joke.

    BAD SIGNS
    1. Focuses on one issue: 7 period day.
    2. Disrespectful conduct: blaming teachers for financial mismanagement
    3. Comes unprepared: did they look like they were prepared to take the blame for their mistakes? Nope, they just shoved it onto someone else.
    4. Board “rubber stamps”: Johnson indeed has surrounded himself by “yes men”
    5. Micromanagement: that’s how they make up for their mistakes, by shuffling our teachers regardless of skill, persoanlity, or desire.
    6. Political agenda: making money. Asking blameless teachers to take a paycut while keeping their own hefty salaries intatct.

Now I extend an invitation to Joanne, Pete and all their constituates out there who think that marriage counseling and a bad memory of this fiasco will make everything better, to explain why all these signs should be ignored. It seems pretty clear to me that we need to start over fresh. Speaking of which, I heard that that someone is actaully circulating a recall petition. Is this true? Who are they? I’d like to shake their hand.

I’m very disappointed that this thread didn’t get any attention. I know there are people who would love to be able to quote this article when sending around a recall petition. So what are people’s thoughts? I never did find out who was circulating that. I would really like to help them.

I think the certain members of the current school board lack vision and the know-how to effectively serve the community.

Why is Peter Hanley on the SMUHSD School Board?

Hanley is not on the board to serve the public, he is there to push his agenda. Is Mr. Hnaley’s agenda good for our children?

    Election Results:
of 116,909 registered voters, of which 65,600 cast
ballots – -31,521 for Robert H. Griffin, 31,173 for Linda Lees Dwyer, 28,493 for Peter H. Hanley, and 15,880 for Sammy Coach? Goldberg?

Hanley finished third in a “three horse race” only beating out Sammy “Coach” Goldberg who was running to promote a single issue of teen obesity.

Is Hanley pushing an agenda or representing the people?

I think there are multiple agendas going on surrounding the board. What I think is most important is getting a recall petition going. I’ve read over the recall guidlines. They’re complex, but definitely do-able. I only regret that I can’t do it. I’d really like to get in touch with someone who is interested in being a proponent of the recall, or someone who already is (I keep hearing rumors that the petition is already out). There’s been a whole lot of talk, and not a whole lot of action. Let’s get the ball rolling…

ASE I believe there is a sizable amount of people (some students) who would be glad to do some foot work. We just need some leaders to step up and direct.

  8. ASE

RCC, it’s my understanding that we can’t even circulate petitions because we’re underaged. Sad, I know, but we’ve got to do our part by encouraging the adults to take action and giving them moral support.
