Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

John Horgan's piece in the San Mateo Times:

FRESH FACE After years of sitting idle and deteriorating markedly, a vacant former Wells Fargo Bank building in downtown Burlingame is about to get a much-needed facelift. The new tenant, Atherton Culinary, a high-end purveyor of kitchen equipment and amenities (and related dining education), is scheduled to move into the facility on Primrose Road by Jan. 1, 2007, according to the outfit's Tom Papageorge. He said his firm, Atherton Appliance & Kitchens, which is headquartered in Redwood City, has signed a five-year lease on the property, which is owned by Safeway. The supermarket chain has an outlet on the same prime parcel. Since the bank branch was closed years ago, it has become the target of vandalism, making it one of the commercial district's worst eyesores. But that's about to change. And about time, too. Papageorge said the remodeling will be extensive.

  1. Five year lease…so much for a new Safeway…I knew it would be another decade away.

I thought the same thing, Fred. (i.e. that the lease means we can kiss a new Safeway goodbye). Why did you state that “I knew it would be another decade away?”

I think they will build the new Safeway at the Peninsula Ave/ Delware center. I read that stores lease is up fpr renewal.

  4. Last year someone asked does anyone know what is going on with the Safeway project.

I replied it’s dead in the water and it will be at least ten years before a new store is built.

Does anyone know what the language of the lease says about terminating the lease for the Wells Fargo building, if not lets not jump to conclusions. Is Safeway going to keep the language of this lease quiet, just as it has done regarding the Walgreen lease?

Regarding the Penn Safeway there are some serious unresolved issues surrounding the access to the residence that are contiguous to the Safeway store.
