Burlingame voters will soon have the rare opportunity to choose from among 9 candidates to elect 4 of them to the 5-member City Council. Getting to know this many candidates in order to make intelligent choices will be a real challenge for many voters. The best way is to hear the candidates first hand. Come hear the candidates address the issues this coming Thursday, September 29th, from 7-9 p.m. at Burlingame Intermediate School Auditorium. Moderators for the debate will be Michelle Durand and Jon Mays of the San Mateo Daily Journal.

The event is jointly sponsored by the San Mateo Daily Journal and Citizens for A Better Burlingame. The Burlingame Intermediate school is located at 1715 Quesada Way in Burlingame.

The Hillsborough school board forum included a question to the candidates about how many school board meetings they have attended.

Question for our candidates – how many council meetings, study sessions, Safeway meetings have you attended?

I like that question. I have overheard people talking about some of the canidates, who have jumped on the bus and decided run for the open council seats. Seems some of them were MIA for years. Just like ground hogs they have surfaced and are looking around to see what is happening.

I will be voting for those individuals, who have a track record of civic involvement and have demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Here is some further detail from the Daily Journal about the format of the Candidates’ Night this Thursday starting at 7pm at BIS:

Section 1: The same introductory question is addressed to all candidates (2 minutes each)

Section 2: The Daily Journal editor asks each candidate a customized question (2 minutes each)

Section 3: The audience can ask questions directed to a particular candidate (2 minutes each)

Section 4: Closing comments by each candidate (2 minutes each)

The innovative part of the agenda is that each candidate will be allowed 3 one-minute “challenges” to any of the other responses that are given. So there will be 36 candidate answers and 27 opportunities for other candidates to respond or challenge what was said. I think this is well thought out. See you there.
