According to the City Clerk, Dan Andersen filed today for the four year seat.

Saw the following in attendance at Dan Anderson’s kick-off party earlier this week: Mike Coffey, Joe Galligan, Gene Condon and Rosalie O’Mahoney. Boy how far Anderson has come from his grass root efforts in earlier years. What kind of help do you think these people are offering him. Who’s zooming who as Aretha would say.
Wot strange bedfellows!
But what will count for Mr. Anderson and the other candidates will be – are they independent thinkers (ie not the M&M’s); do they know the issues; are they a one issue candidate (ie. hospital); and what will they DO for Burlingame.
From Jim – “are they independent thinkers (ie not the M&M’s)”
I know the M&Ms refers to Mary Janney and Mike Coffey but what about “T&C”. Terry Nagel and Cathy Baylock vote identical in council similar to the duo M&M. Independent thinkers…
On the topic of “block voting” or any kind of voting analysis — besides trudging the weekly meeting minutes, is there some easier way of seeing how our elected representatives have voted during their terms?
Sometimes politicians vote the same because they have the same ethics and values. Sometimes politicians ditto vote because they can’t think for themselves or they are puppets.
Up to you, which one applies to M&M or T&C? Perhaps instead of T&C, N&B would be more applicable as it stands for nota bene (Latin) – note well!
I would add, “are they thinkers” period. I want councilmembers who do their homework, independent of how they vote, and whether I agree with them or not. I wanted a smart president, (but oh well, that’s another subject.)
Fred may want a “balanced council” but to me that is just a euphemism for a “divided council”. Plenty of people have been bemoaning the “divided council”. The losers have taken their ball and gone home (to Easton Dr.) so why would we want to recreate some psuedo-balance when none really exists among the residents? I’m looking ahead to all that can be accomplished now that Mr. Petty and his two little fringes are history.
At least with the next council a split vote will indicate true disagreement in town, not some Napoleonic twerp getting off on his own little fantasy.
Many, many, many residents believe that the next council (regardless of the winners) will be a gazillion times better than the Galligan/Coffey/Janney triad of the past. Even the worse case scenario in November will be a vast improvement over the last few years because the new politicos will think, say, do and lead! All with good manners, openness and honesty.
“I never use fake names” – pffft, yeah right.
Al, the city not only requires a balanced council, it depends on it. Allowing just one small group to run a city is not in the best interest of any resident. There are 28,000 people living here who don’t all think alike.
Burlingame as a whole does is not best expressed by a faction but by the whole including all different and diverse opinions.
“pffft” to the old regime, hello to a diverse, balanced, council of the future!
You tell ’em Fiona!
Fred, when one or more candidates kick butt in election after election, how can you still call them a “small group” or a “faction”? You don’t seem math-challenged until we get to vote counting. And don’t tell me “very few people vote” because first, that’s the non-voters own fault and second, it doesn’t hold true in Burlingame where we have had very good voter turnout.
Well, if the CBB opinions expressed here represent the majority then the business owners better pack up and leave town tonight.
This group seems to have no real understanding of what has made this city work well in the past and no plan for how to make this city work well in the future.
But if an inexperienced one-sided council is what the city ends up with then, so be it.
Al, you have come the closest to someone actually admitting that the CBB is a political organization that is actively campaigning for their candidates. Thank you.
Why are you so terrified of the CBB, Fred? They are a group of volunteers who feel strongly about this town. The five people who make the major decisions in this town are the councilmembers.
Don’t you get it yet?
Actually, Fred, scary is a directionless council that relies on the past to direct the future. No new roads, just the same worn out one we’ve been on, cracks and all.
I haven’t followed the CBB too much, but I haven’t seen them do any campaigning. I have seen you mistate who is and isn’t a member according to other posters on this blog. I guess some so-called housing advocate from the city is better at deciding who should or shouldn’t be guiding the city? That’s a sure way to end up like Santa Cruz which you appear not to like.
The CBB I refer to does not include all people who have paid $15 or whatever for their membership and free t-shirt. I am talking the political organization that is made up of mainly CBB members.
Look the members are easy to find. They run this blog (Russ Cohen, Steve & Fiona Hamilton, Joe Baylock) they either work for or have websites designed by crescent creative (Terry Nagel, Cathy Baylock, Anne Keighran, Russ Cohen & the Hamiltons, again). The group of regulars they bring to council and on this blog (Rich, Jenn, Sue…if I list too many they get mad at me). Someone told me the informal leader of the whole group is named Charles.
Now I’m not saying this is a conspiracy and they are entitled to conduct a campaign in any way they see fit or agreed to. But why not come out and admit this is a political effort.
I like the roads Burlingame had taken Jenn (cracks and all) I think the last few years are the only bumpy ones.
Fred, CBB was formed several years ago, not recently. And by the way, several groups were formed in the past couple of years, as well, each with different areas of interest., and none related to the other other. Now, logic would indicate that all these groups were formed, not as a conspiracy, but as a gut reaction to a council majority that didn’t appear to be addressing their concerns as regular residents. You know the saying, United we Stand.?
If things were so smooth as you would like to remember, there wouldn’t be all these groups popping up here and there. Believe me, people have busy lives and it takes them a long time to get upset enough to actually want to invest their private time into a cause.
People who bother to become active in a group, are generally active residents in all aspects of Burlingame, and that may and often does include, supporting various candidates, just like a Lion, or a Rotarian, or whoever does. That is their good right. I wish more people in our town would become active and feel compelled to educate themselves about this or that candidate and vote for heavens sake. Where are the 15-18,000 people who sit it out? That’s a shame.
CBB hasn’t any “informal” leaders. CBB co-chairs are listed on the website, as are the Board of Directors. I am one of those individuals.
I didn’t say your group was a recent political organization, I believe this is your third election. The list of the board of directors is a good place to start. Charles Voltz is the co-leader along with Steve Hamilton. Also, John Root’s wife is a board member. I had thought Root was the fourth candidate the CBB is endorsing since Dan Andersen seems to have fallen out of favor with your organization.
So the CBB endorsements are Baylock, Cohen, Keighran and Root.
Jenn these other groups about PG&E or Broadway Ave are much different than the CBB. They are not campaigning for council seats.
CBB does not campaign for council seats, and support of various individuals varies, just as in any other group.
I am not buying that. Sorry. Your opinions on this website as to city governing are mirror images of each other. Fake names or real.
You will not find Citizens for Better Burlingame making any endorsements. As individuals and residents of this city, each is free to vote as he or she pleases. You’ve mentioned good people, and I will assume that many of them will be supported in the community.
Unlike you, however, I would never be so arrogant as to claim I already knew who is supporting whom. With time, this may become clear as glossies and lawn signs appear.
One more time for the record, Fred. The Voice has many contributors, including many CBB members, some are web savy and have created this site, not for CBB, but for the community. You may think it is propoganda for one cause or the other, and frankly I really don’t care. Everyone can think or blog what they’d like, though the gutter stuff is really beneath this community. I do think this blog serves a useful purpose as a sounding board; we have nothing like this in town and it is sorely lacking.
The support for Nagel, Baylock, Cohen and Keighran is unquestionable, across the board every person I mentioned above. You can call that arrogance but I could post many quotes from previous blogs to back me up.
Root I’m just guessing at there are no quotes on the voice to back up that endorsement so I guess that is arrogant of me and I could be wrong about him.
*******
On a total side note go to google do a search of the word ‘failure’ it is quite funny who is at top of the list.
Fred you are wrong about a helluva lot of things. Didn’t Momma H teach you that if you cannot think of something nice to say (or don’t know what you are talking about), it is better to keep quiet!
Fiona, wrong again, but nice try!
Fred, you seem mostly concerned about inexperience. Surely that word will be thrown around a lot in this election, to scare people.
I agree with you that there is something to be said for continuity, But there is also something to be said for new faces, thoughts and approaches. If continuity were the most important criteria in any election, no governing body would ever change or grow, hopefully for the better. I’m also hearing undertones and an attitude here that is disturbing, (not sure if it was from you, so excuse me if I misspeak, might be that razor individual) that anyone who has not lived in this community more than 30 years is not equiped to understand this community, or function as a councilperson and make decisions on behalf of all the residents of this town.
I have no figures, but can only imagine that a sizable portion of our population are newcomers (and by the way, I am not). It sickens me, actually, and means that basically some people are of the mind that “newcomers” aren’t bonifide residents. We’ll take their money and their property taxes, but they cannot represent us. That is quite a disturbing attitude.
Fred, there are a number of residents, like me, who do not know which candidates will get their support/vote. What the candidates say at the debates will be more important to me than whether they have a website, glossy mailings, fence signs or have supporters in the CBB or the Burlingame Voice! I suspect this applies to most Burlingame voters.
new faces, thoughts and approaches… no governing body would ever change or grow, hopefully for the better
Jen, I think what Fred & myself are worry that these
New faces (CBB Candidates), thoughts & approaches will take CITY OF BURLINGAME? backward, with NO grow/better!
Sure Fiona, I know who you’re voting. Good evening!
I don’t think we could go backwards, Bruce and Fred. Seriously, we’ve been functioning on the same blueprint for several decades. I’m starting to wonder who the “no-growthers” really are, honestly.
Time to look forward, no? This has been an interesting thread afterall. See you all tomorrow. Brave the heat.
I just checked back in only to see that once again Fred has chosen not to respond to the very clear question I asked him….oh well. I guess some people think elections are just informational exercises to be cast aside in favor of “balance”.
Why does Bruce and Fred care so much who these people are endorsing? Who gives a damn who Bruce, Fred or anyone else is voting for?
Or as the suave Rhett Butler said, “Quite frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn”
Al, I read back and I think the question you are referring to is – ‘when one or more candidates kick butt in election after election, how can you still call them a “small group” or a “faction”?’
I’m sorry I didn’t respond, I remember thinking of a response but I guess I didn’t address it. So here goes:
I think all types of people should be running the city not just one group. In the last election didn’t almost every candidate receieve around 2000 to 3000 votes? It wasn’t a runaway race by any means and shows that the city may be as divided as our nation. Not necessarily a bad thing it takes a lot of different people to make a community.

On another note that detailed newspaper article yesterday backs up my point on your political camps. It list Nagel, Keighran and Root in one camp and Cohen and Baylock in another. I don’t know why they are not linking the two groups together. But a glowing review for the CBB all in all. All other candidates aren’t even mentioned until the end of the article.

Very suave Jim, very suave…
Jenn, the ‘no-growthers’ are the ones who helped put the kibosh on the Safeway project.
I’m taking a little breather here, I’m going to stick to the funny blogs for awhile. So, al don’t get mad if I don’t answer anything I’ll be back later.
If anyone else would like to take my seat on this rollercoaster for a bit, feel free and have a nice labor day weekend.
Maybe Fred the two camps cannot be packaged together with a bright pink ribbon because the individuals are independent thinkers and/or have diverse opinions.
Safeway was not about “no growth” it was about growth in the right way that was appropriate for Burlingame! The Planning Commission and the City Council agreed on that one!
What camp does one belong to if they support candidates from each “camp”?
Each to our own camp? You get to name yours too, just don’t choose a Native American Indian mascot.
From the Daily Journal Letters to the Editor today:
I was disappointed to see the Daily Journal print a front page scandal sheet? story appropriately headlined Election mud flies in Burlingame? in the Sept. 27 edition. The story about a candidate for Burlingame City Council was based upon decade old court records and a police report sent to the Daily Journal by an anonymous source.
Does an alleged drunken brawl? at a Sharks game and separate $500 infraction? for disturbing the peace over a business dispute, both of which occurred over 10 years ago, really constitute news? worthy of the Daily Journal’s front page?
The real story is who used their privileged position within law enforcement to illegally disseminate the candidate’s arrest records. In California, arrest records are protected by the right to privacy set forth in Article 1, section one of the California Constitution. (See Central Valley Chapter 7th Step Foundation v. Younger (1989) 214 Cal.App.3d 145 and Penal Code section 11105 and Labor Code section 432.7.)
Moreover, police reports are what lawyers call double-hearsay? nothing more than a police officer’s out-of-court recitation of who said what after the fact. Exaggeration and over-statement are common when witnesses give statements in the heat of the moment. That is one reason why the American justice system employs solemn court proceedings and unbiased juries to assess the real truth from witnesses testifying in person and subject to cross-examination.
Mud is all over the place, it only flies? when someone picks it up and slings it. I am disappointed that the Daily Journal exercised such poor editorial judgment in this case and hope they cooperate in an investigation to determine who broke the law and disseminated confidential government arrest records which are supposed to be maintained for investigative purposes not for the purpose of public humiliation.
