According to the Daily Journal, the police caught four burglars red handed inside the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce early Saturday morning. Two juveniles were arrested with Jesse Markwick, 23, and Christopher Stent, 20, of Redwood City. A neighbor called police at 2 a.m. Saturday when they saw the four climbing through a window at the Burlingame train station, where the Chamber of Commerce is located. When police arrived, they found the four inside the office. There was minimal damage to the building and the burglars didn't have the chance to steal anything, said Burlingame police Sgt. Pete Tokarski

  • After inquiries were made to the Parks and Rec director about the slow progress on the refurbishment of the Pershing Park playground, the Burlingame Voice received this response from Parks Superintendant Tim Richmond:

New playground equipment is finally visible at Pershing Park. After two lengthy design related delays, the final phases of the construction are occurring. Both the construction drawings and the equipment installation plan had to be modified after inaccuracies were discovered in source park documents. When all the equipment has been installed, a layer of rough concrete will be poured. This will form the base for the safety surfacing. The safety surfacing installation will mark the final step of the construction process.

The delays have been a great disappointment to neighbors, park users, staff, and all those involved in the construction. We are all eager for the project to come to a successful completion. When an exact completion date can credibly be given, it will be publicized.

In the meantime the kids peer wistfully through the fence hoping the new playground equipment will be ready before they have to go back to school.

  • Happy BirthdayJust two short years ago the Burlingame Voice editors launched the 'blog' with the first posting about the elections.

After two years the Voice has had nearly 1000 postings and more than 5500 comments. As we continue to sizzle in the pre-election season, I am sure we will be seeing new highs .. and lows … in blogging in the coming months.

Happy Birthday to all the bloggers and lurkers alike!

  • The first signs of the election have appeared. Candidate Condon has a sign on the window of Bridges Tire & Wheel and a sign on Broadway. Get ready for a deluge of signage from all 9 candidates.

  • According to an ad in the San Mateo Times today, we can look forward to the Art and Jazz Festival on August 13 and 14 in "HISTORIC Burlingame Avenue". Yes, folks, the ad states that it is in HISTORIC Burlingame Avenue. Great to see the word HISTORIC in a town like Burlingame!

One other thing … the ad says it is "presented by the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce in association with the Burlingame Merchants". If the merchants over and above DBID (or is it below!) are helping with this historic occasion then fine, but if the copresenters are the DBID, please Georgette et all, get the name right. Kumbaya!

  • Some info on Mr. Prendiville, according to the Daily Journal:

    (1) New Zealand-born Prendiville, 49, is a general contractor who ran for the council in the last election. Prendiville first came to the United States in 1979 as a tourist and returned in 1987. He married and had a daughter

    (2) Two Year or Four? – he originally intended to run for the two-year seat but reconsidered. I figured, what can you do in two years,? Prendiville said. I kind of thought Russ Cohen was entitled to it.? Cohen, president of the Burlingame Historical Society, was the runner up in the last election.

    (3) His goals – encourage housing to be built on the Bayshore and pursue a smaller plan for Donnelly Plaza than the concept proposed by architect Dan Ionescu. Tenants near Donnelly might object to a building more than two stories high, he said. Prendiville said he hoped to give the council fresh ideas and be a team player.

His comment about what could be achieved in just two years reminds me of a very erudite statement made by candidate Patrick Jensen in an election debate a few years back.

  • According to the Daily Journal today:

In the Burlingame Elementary School District, Trustee Alison Van Dyke said Monday she would not seek re-election after serving one term. She has two children out of the district and said she would like to spend more time with them. It's a large time commitment, and I'm just ready to move on,? Van Dyke said. It's a wonderful opportunity to get involved and I urge parents to do so.?

Three seats are open in Burlingame: Van Dyke, Linda Lees Dwyer and Marc Friedman. Friedman said he will run. Dwyer said in February she was considering running for one of the three open seats on the San Mateo Union High School District Board, but did not return a call for comment Monday. Her children attend high school.

Rawson Groves Hobart, a former Burlingame Community for Education president, is rumored to want to run for the Burlingame board, as well as Washington Elementary PTA president Liz Gindraux. Neither pulled papers on Monday
