From the Daily Journal on a day important to the start of the silly season!
How to rebuild the downtown Safeway is a key issue in Burlingame where seven people have already declared their candidacy.
Planning Commissioner Ann Keighran declared her intention to run in March, a day later, John Root, former San Mateo County Expo Center general manager announced his candidacy. Resident Gene Condon has already produced color fliers. Community activist Dan Andersen is also considering pulling nomination papers.
Long-time resident and high school teacher Don Lembi announced his candidacy this week, although he was unavailable for comment Friday afternoon. Incumbents Joe Galligan, Rosalie O'Mahony and Cathy Baylock have all announced their intention to run for their own seats. Councilman Mike Coffey's July 1 resignation broke the race a little wider as his seat is now open. The council voted July 5 to hold a special election to fill a two-year seat since Coffey had already served two years of his four-year term. Russ Cohen, who was 176 votes behind Coffey in the 2003 election was thinking about running but will likely pass.
Did I miss it that Lembi declared his candidacy? As stated here on the Voice he was at Tower Road, but is he running or managing a campaign?
So as a past mayor so eloquently put it, their running shoes are on …
