Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

The San Mateo Daily Journal reports that according to the Broadway survey, a bakery is needed on Broadway. Also more family restaurants, a shoe store and a meat market. Some said there were too many nail and hair salons.

Kudos to Ann Keighran for spearheading this survey to find out what residents want. Thank you, Ann.

Whats up with Burlingame Avenue and those four or five or is it six empty stores plus soon to be empty photo store? Are the rents too high or is our Big Street not as proud as it could be?

Believe or not, the rent for those spaces are extreemly high compare to Broadway or San Mateo downtown. I am not sure the small businesses/ local business owners can afford those space anymore.

The same $$ could be worth for triple spaces in San Mateo downtown.
Is it really that worth on business perspective at Burlingame Avenue??

Any input from local community would be great!

I have noticed new and exciting new businesses in San Mateo and would love to hear what the average rent is for Broadway and San Mateo and Burlingame Avenue.

Maybe the success of Burlingame Avenue has made our landlords greedy (no names please!). There must be at least five/six/seven empty spots in Downtown Burlingame. Can’t blame it on the assessment fees!

I have heard that rents are skyrocketing in San Mateo’s downtown, as well. Probably just a matter of time before they have the same issues as we do.

Can’t really tell the average rent, because it’s all depend on which landlord are you dealing with.

    It’s just sad!
At the end, only big box stores can afford to keep their businesses running on that area.
    Where is the excitement????
We can always find the same products anywhere,in the same setting…..same formula stores in the whole country.

I think it’s all back to the community, we can help the local & small businesses to keep the Burlingame like what we do love about. A few big names are OK, but if the whole city occupied by those formula stores, we maybe will have the same sofas, same lamps, same christmas tree with our next door neighbour. Where are the choices??

I noticed more and more big names came to Burlingame and blow away the little stores who can’t compete with them ….It’s not a surprise to find 50 to 70% discount at those big names and they do it almost all the time.

Is anybody know, the mark up price at those formula stores are about 10-20 times from their cost??…to give away 50 to 70% discount will not hurt them at all. But for the little stores, they mostly just double their product cost (to pay out the rent and employees), so how come they able to compete with those Giant players??
….. when the little stores give away 50 to 70% discount, it almost guarantee…. they are about to close out their business.
