For years folks in Burlingame have been taking their lives into their hands simply because they'd like to take a bike ride around town. Finally, a plan to make Burlingame much more bicycle and pedestrian friendly is underway. The Traffic, Safety and Parking Commission formed a subcommittee to study the issue. Forming a committeee had been suggested by Councilwoman Baylock and echoed last year by council candidate Russ Cohen. Coincedently, Cohen is the current chair of the TSP Commission and sits on the bike path subcommittee. Kudos go to Baylock for knowing that forming the committee and making reccomendations will allow Burlingame to become eligible for funding for this effort. Further kudos to Planning Commissioner Brownrigg, TSP Commissioner Condon, Staff Liason Brooks and Commissoner Cohen for addressing the issue and crafting a plan.
The plan is in its draft form and has been available for review by the public for some time. It is still available for review and was passed unanimously by the Planning Commission on Monday evening.
There are many components to the plan including a better bicycle/pedestrian overepass to the trail along the bayfront as well as new paths created along Carolan Drive for both the recreational cyclist and the commuter cyclist.
One of the most exciting components of the plan includes signage that touts that Burlingame is a bike friendly town. This alerts drivers that cyclists will be sharing the road with them.
This is the kind of pro-active government Burlingame needs.
In accordance with full disclosure, Cohen is a founder and current editorial board member of The Burlingame Voice.
