Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

On Monday October 6, City council will consider creating a Burlingame Hall of Fame, adminstered by the Parks & Recs Commission. Already two names are in the hat for the inaugural entrants, Vic Mangini & Jim Murray. The citizens can nominate anyone who should be honored for their community involvement and contributions to Burlingame.

Are we going to go back to Anson himself (he did get the town named after him!) or maybe William Howard (he got a street named after him!). How about John Donnelly who built the first family house here. Or Davenport Bromfield who laid out the streets that make up most of Burlingame. Or George W. Gates early stationmaster, postmaster, banker and realtor. The list goes on of suitable worthies.

Somehow I think this Hall of Fame will be reserved for those who have done most for the council, rather than the town. This sounds like just another way to hand out political patronage.

  1. Pauline and Jim Murray are two Burlingame residents who deserve accolades way beyond a silly Hall of Fame. They epitomize good sportsmanship, downright good decent caring people and quite frankly I can’t think of anyone who comes even close to being in the same league. If we don’t allow the soccer field to be named Murray Field could we get something like …? Field in the not too distant future – oh God the nasty possibilities. If the City doesn’t want to name public properties in honor of Burlingame residents, why do we have Mangini Way? Was that “allowed” because it is on school property? Murray Field is entirely appropriate to recognize Pauline and Jim Murray – they have no personal agendas, didn’t want fancy accolades, nor political favors – Pauline and Jim are just good, decent caring people. A Hall of Fame does not do them justice!

  2. Actually, I was thinking of a Burlingame Hall of Infamy. There is no shortage of candidates. Whose hairbrained scheme is this anyway? Do we really need such athing when we don’t even have our “historic arch” yet???

As for Mangini being ina Hall of Fame…bah, some of us actually went to BHS and remember how he was.

  3. Well, let’s see:

Burlingame already has a “Mall of Fame.” That would be Burlingame Avenue, of course.

We have a “Stall of Fame,” too. That would be the morning commute as rush hour drivers attempt to traverse the infernal intersection at Broadway and California Drive.

The “Ball of Fame” would be in possession of the Burlingame High School Panthers.

The “Wall of Fame” has yet to be built, but Safeway seems to have that in its plans for its proposed gargantuan-sized general store.

The “Brawl of Fame” would be the upcoming City Council race.

Burlingame’s “Pub Crawl of Fame” has lost a couple of “members,” what with La Piñata and Left at Albuquerque missing from the Avenue.

October 7th, Burlingame voters will participate in the “Recall of Fame.”

Housing on the east side of Highway 101 in Burlingame would be our “Sprawl of Fame.”

Some of the graffiti around town comes under the heading of “Scrawl of Fame.”

So, I suppose my two-cents’ worth would be in my best drawl, “Listen y’all, we don’t need such a hall.”

  4. Perhaps the Hall of Fame should not include mayors, ex-mayors and council members because they do have their own Hall of Fame in City Hall. It will be hard to choose from “the little people” because so many resident/volunteers do hundreds of volunteer hours – quietly and without fancy accolades. Just as it should be.

  5. We are sorry to hear that Jim has passed away. Both Jim and Pauline were THE best and Burlingame should be honored that Murray Field will be named after them. We will never forget how important Jim and Pauline were to our family.
