I finally got a taste of Salt & Straw ice cream, but I didn't walk over to the Avenew to get it.  On flights to and from Boston on Alaska Air, it was the dessert in First Class.  Chocolate on the way out was…just chocolate.  Returning with the Meyer Lemon Custard with Blueberry Jam seemed more in line with their claim to artisan ice cream, but it was nothing special.  What say you Voice readers?  I hear the new ownership at Preston's is knocking it out of the park.

I don’t think Salt & Straw generally lives up to the hype, but a lot depends on the flavor. Javier’s chocolates at Preston’s are yummy — I am partial to the black sesame & pinenut, ginger & orange, sesame & pecan, and cherrylicious (cherry & almond). Pricey but oh so good!!!
The new Michoacanita ice cream shop on El Camino in San Bruno is worth a visit for its wide variety of ice cream and popsicle flavors.

Yes, the new owner at Preston’s is knocking it out of the park! He kept the old favorites and added new ones too. We love Irene and we’re grateful Javier is keeping our beloved candy shop alive 🙂
