I have a Fall question for the South B'gamers. After you have heard John Horgan's voice wafting over the town as he announces a Friday night BHS Panther football game (like last Friday night), do you miss it when it is not here (like tonight)?

No!!!!

No one announces the score like he can….
when intones “Panthers..42…”Other Team…(wait for it…..) ZERO”. -
Horgan really likes the sound of his own voice.
-
It is the signal of fall for us. I have learned to appreciate and enjoy it. I’ve heard many a game from our backyard.
-
You only have one more chance this year — next Friday. The Little Big Game is away this year.
-
The Panthers had a big win last night:
After 18 years, the Burlingame Panthers’ drought is over.
It was 1997 when the Panthers last captured a Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division championship. And even though this year’s bid looked to be in dire straits after last week’s loss to Sacred Heart Prep, Burlingame bounced back in Friday’s Bay Division finale with a 14-0 victory over Menlo-Atherton at Umland Stadium.
The stop sent the Panthers into the halftime locker room up 7-0. The Panthers’ offense may not have put up a spectacular performance — running back Laipeli Palu managed a game-high of 95 yards on 23 carries — but they controlled the tempo of the game, and grinded out two gutsy scoring drives.

If this or other Rotary celebrations, hands-on philanthropic projects and fundraisers sounds appealing to you, please contact a friend who’s a member to be introduced to membership.
Let’s get pumped for “The Little Big Game”! -
Rotary… is this your defination of appropriate behavior by one of your members?
Di Yim’s leadership at BHS makes Jed York look like a genious. Once again, her failures are the talk of the town yet there is no action by anyone.
Do we want our daughters grinding to “Dick in a Box” like the principal?
As Bruce D would say, how about “a blast from the past!”
The BHS Principal gyrates to the song “Dick in a Box” while high school boys thrust their hips upon one another in the background.
Can we expect more in this yea’sr Little Big Game Rally?
Its time to give this lady the boot or next year there will be no Little Big Game, just like everything else she has destroyed at BHS.
Start watching at about 2:59 and wait for the voice to say “Oh God… this song.”
-
Richard, I’m sorry that you have concerns about BHS, or about the dancing. You should voice that to the school, the school district, or on a thread that is focused on concerns about BHS.
However, we had a wonderful event yesterday. It started with a presentation honoring Veterans and highlighting the Veterans in our club.
All of the football players and cheerleaders joined our lunch, along with the coaches, principal, school district board chair, etc. The key note speaker was Diane Dwyer, BHS alumna and well known NBC broadcaster and Cal professor. https://www.google.com/#q=Diane+Dwyer She was a cheerleader at BHS, so it really tied together well. It was a very positive and uplifting program for everyone who attended.
And, we reiterated our annual scholarships for both 2 and 4 year programs to the high schoolers in attendance.
Richard, you would have enjoyed the event. -
Dear Positive and Uplifting.
The thread at the top of the page says BHS so I guess this would be the place to post an item on BHS.
Thank you for the update on the adults and the work done by Rotary while ignoring the students themselves. Do they even know anything about Diane Dwyer? (Because Diane was a cheeleader it tied together well?)
I rememer her from high school, thanks for bringing her back. I suspect that Diane would not tolerate this type of behavior in her own school must less as a student.
So,.. do you really condone the Principal doing a bump and grind to “Dick in a Box” in front of the entire school?
You stated that the principal was one of your guests and a member of Rotary. Is this the approved actions of a member of Rotary?
By the way… thanks for the scholarships… next time actually talk to the students to find out what is going on in their lives.
It seems that pizza on the ave is more important than our students. -
The Rotarians are very very generous with our high school(s). My daughter while at BHS received a scholarship from them before graduating. But I have to agree with the comments about this “event”. I am completely out of the loop with BHS these days, but I think this type of display (including the Principal’s participation) looks really tacky. In the olden days of the 1970s, BHS was known as a “party school”. In fairness, there were decades in between where they seemed to redeem themselves academically, probably due to some stellar teachers under strong guidance from Principal(s). I can only hope what happens in the classroom now is more in keeping with what a first class high school should be.
-
The dance is so harmless and the crowd seemed to like it. If there’s problems with the principal this, as an example, is indicative of nothing. The principal who turned Burlingame around in 1983 was Larry Teshara and he was there until 1997.
-
It’s Frat material, but I guess that is deemed “harmless” by most today–
-
Is it harmless?
Do you want your freshman daughter coming home and dancing to “Dick in a Box” while teen boys dry hump one another in the background?
If you know the song, I’ve got a “Dick in a Box” is not appropriate for a captive crowd.
So after dancing to “Dick in a Box,” how does the principal then discipline students for innapropriate behavior in class?
A male student walks up to a female teacher and says “hey, I’ve got a present for you.. Its a Dick in a Box!”
Well, the principal just did a bump and grind routine to the “Dick in a Box” song for the whole school, so I guess it must be OK. -
Wow – I’ve read a lot of quite serious criticisms of Di Yim on this blog, but now that I’ve seen an example of what you feel constitutes egregious behavior on her part I’m going to need to recalibrate, and add several grains of salt to my reading of other similar posts. This video frankly looks pretty anodyne to me – yes, maybe a little bit tacky, but in the context of helping to get the kids fired up before the LBG it’s nowhere near over the line IMHO. Thanks for sharing.

It is a little hard to hear the lyrics so you can read them here http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/lonelyisland/dickinabox
-
Lets spell it out.
In front on the entire Burlingame High School student body at a mandatory rally…
A group of male students performed mock sexual acts on one another and then spun packages on their genitals to the song “Dick in a Box.”
Rather than stopping the conduct, BHS Principal Yim came out and not only joined the conduct, but also encouraged the boys, and “shook her money-maker” to the beat.
This was a prepared skit. Teachers and Parents walked out of the rally.
The principal had full knowledge of the event and pushed unwanted sexual content on the student population. If this event had taken place at the offices of Facebook, Twitter, or the like, the adults in the room would be filing lawsuits.
Adults are trained to prevent this type of behavior in the workplace. Its not about the Little Big Game… its about appropriate and responsibl behavior by the high school principal.
In the real world would be fired for participating in such an event. -
Every student in the school knew what was going on and the lyrics to the song.
“Dick In A Box”
(feat. Justin Timberlake)
Hey girl I got somethin’ real important to give you
So just sit down and listen
Girl you know we’ve been together such a long long time (such a long time)
And now I’m ready to lay it on the line
(Wooow) You know it’s Christmas and my heart is open wide
Gonna give you something so you know what’s on my mind
A gift real special, so take off the top
Take a look inside — it’s my dick in a box
Not gonna get you a diamond ring
That sort of gift don’t mean anything
Not gonna get you a fancy car
Girl ya gotta know you’re my shining star
Not gonna get you a house in the hills
A girl like you needs somethin’ real
Wanna get you somethin’ from the heart
Somethin’ special girl
It’s my dick in a box, my dick in a box babe
It’s my dick in a box, my dick in a box girl
See I’m wise enough to know when a gift needs givin’ (yeah)
And I got just the one, somethin’ to show ya that you are second to none
To all the fellas out there with ladies to impress
It’s easy to do just follow these steps
1: Cut a hole in a box
2: Put your junk in that box
3: Make her open the box
And that’s the way you do it
It’s my dick in a box… my dick in a box babe
It’s my dick in a box, my dick in a box girl
Christmas; dick in a box
Hanukkah; dick in a box
Kwanzaa; a dick in a box
Every single holiday a dick in a box
Over at your parent’s house a dick in a box
Mid day at the grocery store a dick in a box
Backstage at the CMA’s a dick in a box (yeah-wow-wow-wow-wow-wow)
a dick in a box… -
Was this last year or is the Youtube date wrong?
-
Some of you who are not familiar with where this song came from… It is from a Saturday Night Live skit with Justin Timberlake and Andy Samburg. After watching the original you may have a better understanding of why so many feel the principal not only allowing, but performing with the students was completely inappropriate.
(NSFW) http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/snl-digital-short-d-in-a-box/n12100 -
Classy. Very classy. What is the pregnancy rate at BHS these days? STD rate?
-
I agree, this is not appropriate behavior from the boys for a public event, especially not at a school.
I think that this was innocent oversight on behalf of the school, and on behalf of The Principal.
The students themselves should have known that this was inappropriate for themselves, let alone inviting their female principal to join them.
And, I believe that The Principal felt like she needed to go with the flow and be cool.
Meanwhile, Jerry Brown is pushing bills to allow boys into the girls bathrooms and girls into the boys bathrooms.
Ultimately, parents are responsible for their children and for their children’s sense of right and wrong. If a child grows up uneducated, it’s ultimately the responsibility of that child’s parents, not some government agency. -
The principal practiced the dance routine with the boys.. If you watch the video, she runs like she was going to stop them for their e=sexual acts, only to join in on the routine.
She practiced the routine with the boys.
There is no excuse for this behavior. How can you blame the teen boys when the adult female principal condones and participates in the act?
Blame the boys? Who is in charge at the school? -
I’m still shaking my head….The boys are to blame?
So the principal with a Masters Degree from Harvard does not have enough sense to figure out that the performance is innapropriate and the Boys are to blame?
The teen boys were given consent by their principal to perform the act. She was acting as a role model.
If the principal is not responsible for her own actions at the school then who is? Should we call Ms. Yim’s parents? -
Oh, I didn’t realize that the principal had practiced this performance with the students. Yes, the students are responsible for their own bad judgement and their parents are responsible to teach them good judgement and lastly, the principal should have the judgement to suggest a less provocative routine.
Perhaps we are all relying upon the gov’t and their culture and their leaders way, way too much.
However, in as much as we’ve heard a few complaints about BHS on this one website, I would have liked to have seen a seperate critique of BHS thread, rather than you guys raining on my post of a positive and uplifting community experience and the earlier posts about the stadium, which included many community leaders and contributors and students.
Thanks. -
I must call you out on calling something that is disgusting merely “provocative”. You just do not seem to get it.
-
The head in the clouds attitude about BHS is why there are problems. Time and Place is more angry about “spoiling” her uplifting and positive post than the fact the principal of BHS decided to involved in a disgusting dance routine. She has destroyed the positive and uplifting environment of the campus and has destroyed school spirit. She has eradicated anything associated with the traditions, practices or foundations of the campus. Students, teachers, and parents are fed up. District leaders, school board members, and the community are all aware of the problem (and the Dick in the Box Dance) yet no one is willing to act. They read the voice and have watched the video. The video went viral among the students.
If you leave your head in the sand long enough.. you might not recognize the landscape when you pull it out.
The “community leaders and contributors” need to step up and fix the problems that are impacting our children and high school. -
It’s “Dick in a Box”. The students have known this song and skit since grade school. These kids have grown up with Family Guy and South Park. Get a grip, people!
-
Is it cheesy and stupid? Yes. Did the students do cheesy and stupid rallies in the ’70s, the ’80s, the ’90s? Yes. Hell, a student got attacked by a tiger at a rally at San Mateo high. Did they call for the principal’s resignation because he endangered the lives of his students by allowing a Bengal to to lunge into the auditorium seats? No. She dances with an umbrellla, big deal.
-
No one here has there head in the clouds, perhaps I was trying to be polite…
Can someone please elaborate on this part, “She has eradicated anything associated with the traditions, practices or foundations of the campus.”
What has she done specifically regarding this? -
Fred,
Your daughter comes home from school and reports that her teacher put the video “Dick in a Box” on the TV and then gyrated around the classroom while male students performed mock sexual actions on one another in the background.
Would you find this appropriate?
You can’t judge the adults by a student “potty mouth” standard. If not, lets just put students in charge of the school and call it a day.
If the Tiger attempted to dry hump one of the students there may have been trouble.
Traditions… you are connected. Talk to the students, you just had them at one of your events. Find out what is going on in their lives and their interpretation of BHS. -
Listen, fellas, Bruce Dickinson must laugh, yes chuckle at the one of the posters above who thought the principal dancing to the routine decided to do so on an impromptu basis. Talk about being out of touch with reality! It looks to me that Di Yim usually carries an umbrella on sunny days and thus the dance focused on umbrellas, making fun of her usage of one. Even one of the kids on the video says “best dance everrrrrrrr” in that mouthy teenage accent du jour. But I gotta tell ya, Di Yim has some pretty nice moves and can “shake it” and “boogie” with the big boys. Wish I had that sorta principal as a teenage boy growin’ up, ya know what I mean? The again, would have been probably gotten this Dickinson into too much trouble, too early on! This whole ordeal is one of those things that make you go hmmmm.
Anyway, moving on, how about some Dickinson OUT of the box, that is my sharing my knowledge and insight into the very issues at play here as an an industry insider. Folks, the song “Dick in a Box” is considered explicit material, and actually has such a label on physical albums as well as contained within digital streaming or downloading interfaces, such as i Tunes. I was involved in some of the industry debates in the mid-80s when the RIAA and the national PTA (Parent Teachers Association) of all bodies was complaining about more explicit lyrics creeping into popular music that was being listened to and bought by minors. This was catalyzed by Tipper Gore hearing one of her kids listen to Prince’s “Darling Nikki” of Purple Rain fame and she was the co-founder of the Parents Music Resource Center. Of course these were the days before her “carbon footprint” got too big for Al Gore to even care anymore, so she used his sway to hold congressional hearings on the subject to force the industry’s hand to quasi self regulate. Anyway, the RIAA agreed to certain standards where any song containing explicit lyrics had to be posted on album covers and some retailers to this day will not sell such albums with a “PAL” or parent advisory label to anyone under 18. So being under 18 years old is considered the age where parental discretion is advised. I personally was a fan of the labeling, as this opened doors for artists to creatively express themselves in new ways, but at the same time, how does one effectively regulate was is listened to by kids as they’d get their hands on it anyway, most likely? I wouldn’t want my kids or my granddaughter listening to many explicit lyric songs, so I get it as a parent and grandparent, but I’m not there controlling their every move at every point of the day. However, I don’t think this is something that I should worry about happening at school, that i,s the decision would have to reside with and be made by me.
Allowing this song to be played as well as a crafting a choreographed performance to it (as much I enjoyed watching her dance to it), was inappropriate behavior for the leader of a school. The kids seemed to love it, of course, but encouraging the playing and dancing to a song that not only has pornographic references, but those references are lyrically juxtaposed with religious holidays can be perceived by many parents, teachers, and members of the community as too controversial. There could have been hundreds of other songs used that carried no such controversy and would have been just as fun if used creatively. Using a corporate harassment standard, such material could be deemed offensive and inappropriate especially to members of protected classes, so likewise it should not be played in a public school setting. Are corporate standards higher than what we expose our children to on a daily basis? I hope not, but seems to be the case here. So Di Yim, in my opinion exercised very poor judgment.
Seems like the principal is trying a little to hard to get popular with the student “body” but admittedly it seemed to work quite well, judging from the audience reactions on the video! -
Bruce,’
Watch the video again. The presents were being spun on the boys genitals. The umbrellas were a penis-like-object. She carries an umbrella all the time. The boys are not stupid…. but we know who is.
Given everything else going on at BHS at the directionof Ms. Yim, we can just list this an another screw up. -
Raising a kid in Burlingame one learns that some parents are parents and some parents want to be friends to their children. Probably the same with teachers and principals.
-
You took the words right out of my mouth, Pastor Pete…
-
Back on topic for a moment:
According to the Times, we will get one more Friday Night Lights opportunity this coming Friday at 7pm when No. 5 Archbishop Riordan visits No. 4 Panthers in the CCS Open Division III playoffs. -
If you listen closely you can year the shit hitting the fan over at BHS.
-
Until just now, I was unaware that the infamous Dick In A Box video had previously come to light. I truly cannot believe anyone would even attempt to justify a high school principal allowing and PARTICIPATING in such a performance. She should have been fired immediately by the SMUHSD. I do believe there is ONE person posting under several names justifying it.
Let’s be clear. I do not have any love for Di Yim.
Recently, the girl’s varsity coach quit and was replaced by Matt Kunst, a Burlingame grad and former Burlingame basketball player. Matt is going to be a GREAT coach. He was handling the boy’s freshman team, but answered the emergency call and agreed to coach the girl’s varsity when the vacancy occurred.
Chris Holleran was a really good Principal and good man. Brent Daniels would have been a superb Principal, but when he was passed over, he left and is now Principal at Piedmont High School (the Piedmont inside of Oakland).
It’s very unfortunate that it’s come to this, but Ms. Yim is a disgrace and should be fired yesterday. -
Di Yim has officially resigned effective end of year.
-
At the SMUHSD Board Meeting on March 24, Superintendent Skelly made the “Dick in the Box” situation worse by defending Principal Di Yim’s actions.
Skelly blamed the teenage boys for Yim’s choice to be in the dance routine. “Why would they do that to their principal?” “
“I don’t know about Dick in the Box and neither did she.” Says Skelly.
OK-Fine… Lets go with that for a moment…. What did Yim do once she did find out the dance was inappropriate?
She did nothing…. But now we get to blame the students.
Skelly needs to step up and take responsibility that the students and parents at the game saw an adult engaged in a highly inappropriate dance with teen boys. If there were an issue, a responsible leader would have taken immediate action.
Yim took no action.
1.The dance routine was practiced by the boys (an Yim) and approved by the school’s leadership program and administration.
2. If Principal Yim saw something wrong (as she stated to Skelly) then she should have immediately shut down the dance and reprimanded the boys. She did nothing. She is seen enjoying herself in the light of the bump and grind of being popular with Senior Boys.
3. If Principal Yim was tricked, she should have called a meeting with the boys and their parents to discuss the incident and its ramifications. She did nothing.
4. Principal Yim should have sent a communication to students, staff, and parents properly identifying the dance as an inappropriate act that should not have taken place at school and apologized to the Burlingame Community. She did nothing.
5. Principal Yim did not think that there was anything wrong with the dance as she enjoyed herself and her day of being popular with senior boys.
6. Principal Yim and Dr. Skelly are now blaming the boys for the dance. Dr. Skelly made a statement for the record and admonished the students for their actions.
Dear Dr. Skelly and the SMUHSD Board please stop defending acts that are defenseless. The problems you have at BHS are real and you are attempting to deflect them.
The Board embarrassed itself at its last meeting in its attempt to justify its actions.
Its time to launch the investigation into BHS and get rid of the dead weight teachers who are the problem.
As the students are saying “Only the good Di Yim”

Oh come on. Enough about inappropriate dance.
There is way tool much over focus about this incident.
Let it go.. Put Dick back in a box and fugetta about it. Move on -
I’ve heard from more than one person, that had worked with Skelly in Palo Alto, that his entire administration office jumped for joy the day he left for SMUHSD. Unfortunately, I think this superintendent will be no better than what we have had. I can’t imagine why we couldn’t of hired a superintendent that isn’t another district’s reject. I’m afraid we are in for more of the same…

Dear SMUHSD, A bit of the truth would be more forthcoming in the Daily Journal Article. Paul Belzer is a great leader but was it really his choice to come to BHS? “Belzer, 49, was hired after former Burlingame principal Di Yim resigned in the wake of a public clash with a popular teacher.” Yim’s resignation was “allowed” by the district as a means to give her the ability to walk away from the train wreck she created. According to BHS faculty, Yim hastily crafted a resignation the morning of the student/parent protest and moved quickly to make the announcement before the protest began. Skelly allowed the resignation so he would not have to fire Yim at the end of the year. According to district personnel, Skelly could not allow a principal to be taken down by a teacher… Nelson would have to be transferred in order for the district to save face. The BHS parents group had already mounted a two-year battle against Yim and wanted her fired after the end of her second year. Superintendent Lawrence should have taken out Yim, but he was already out the door. As one SMUHSD Board member put it, “He was an absentee Superintendent that we were paying almost $300,000,000 per year” If this is the position of the Board, then it is no wonder this issue came about. “Belzer, who was hired in April after spending 11 years as principal of Mills High School, said he looks forward to transitioning his focus to educating a community with its own unique set of interests.” Do you think that a leader who spends 11 years building a program at Mills really wants to leave? Belzer is another casualty of the Yim debacle. He was also the only leader who could take over at BHS. The SMUHSD explanation for the Belzer selection is also misleading. Did he really want to leave Mills High School? “Though district officials do not typically transfer principals between schools, said district spokeswoman Sheri Costa, a unique set of circumstances led to Belzer’s appointment at Burlingame High School. “a unique set of circumstances led to Belzer’s appointment” The SMUHSD interviewed for the BHS position and came down to two final candidates. The problem was that neither candidate had any high school experience. One candidate took another job and the other one dropped out leaving BHS with no leadership. Belzer is a great leader and is most likely the only one who could pull BHS together after the disaster known as Yim. A key fact… the entire BHS interview team who interviewed and selected Yim left BHS within two years after her selection They were disgraced by her failure. “First, after interviewing a number of candidates, we felt Principal Belzer remained the best fit for [Burlingame High School],” Costa said in an email. “Second, we knew that he had left Mills in such a great position that his successor would be left to lead a stable and successful school.” SMUHSD district spokeswoman Sheri Costa (who also pulls down over $100k per year) is misleading. Belzer was never a candidate for principal. He BECAME the best fit for the job when the interview process failed. It became very clear that placing a new principal at Mills High School would be much easier than Burlingame. “The district team was right in that the BHS community is reportedly really enjoying Principal Belzer’s leadership style and ability to build positive relationships” If the District Leadership team was right they should have fired Yim and spared the damage and costs to BHS. The SMUHSD failed at every step of the game and now they claim victory? Where was the same district team when Yim was grindig to “Dick in a Box” and screwing up most every issue known to schools. Faculty report that Yim was such an obsessive micro-manager that she repulsed most everyone around her. She knew nothing about everything but continued to attempt to lead. Under Yim’s leadership, BHS lost most of its senior non-teaching staff and some of its top teachers. As a community, Yim’s principal-ship was the breakpoint. She was a failure and took apart BHS in the process… but that was known to the SMUHSD leadership and the Board for a while. They did not mind “sticking it” to the BHS community who has often complained about a variety of issues. The Yim disaster falls at the feet of the Board. They allowed Scott Lawrence to sit in office and collect his paycheck without showing up for work. Just ask the Mills Parents when they had concerns about D-Tech. Lawrence showed up in his sweatsuit to listen to parents and then walked away doing nothing. When the time came to show Yim the door, Lawrence allowed with her to stay as he moved on to another position and moved BHS on step further towards disaster. The SMUHSD and its Board would make greater inroads with its community if it attempted to tell the truth. Lawrence walked away from his job with a fat paycheck and no one in charge. Yim was a known disaster after one year, yet she was allowed to stay. She was protected. Di Yim was a “Dick in the Box” from day one. She was reprimanded for her dance by Superintendent Lawrence but then lied to Skelly who then defended her. In the end it is the school and the culture of BHS that has lost. Yim attempted to eradicate all memory of BHS past in order to build “her own” future. She was almost successful. “The first thing that makes Burlingame unique is that it is a school with just short of 100 years of history,” Belzer said. “There is a lot of sense of pride and ownership that the community feels in connection with the high school, and that’s really exciting…” If BHS wants to get back on its feet, then its time to connect with its past. Its time to bring back some long past BHS traditions like students eating on the front lawn and re-building the BHS spirit of decades past. .
