Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

The west end of the Avenew is perking up even more with the opening of Sixto's by the owners of Alana's Cafe.  Early buzz has been good and it was crowded on a recent early weeknight.  The council decision to add a few more restaurant permits allowed Pizzeria Delfina to accelerate its plans for B'game ahead of Palo Alto.

I had a little pre-opening preview of Delfina's yesterday with the general manager.  Most of the fixtures are in and a Dec. 23rd opening is planned.  The space looks sleek with ground floor seating, the back patio (which will open later) and the upstairs loft.  The only downside was that the front balcony above the Avenew was not feasible to incorporate into the overall plan.  You can see it in the photo, but it only serves as a big clerestory for light.

One of the things I love in life, besides the Burlingame Voice, is Pizza.
Delfina has it right with the most “basic pizza requirements.”
Parking/Stopping to pick up-to go Pizza in the back.
No hassels, parking concerns, keeping all “the kids” in one spot.
Unfortunetley, that blows “Blue Line Pizza right out of the water.”
    I like Blue Line Pizza.
If I have to drive around and around to get a Pizza to take home, I will not be doing Blue Line anymore.
    Sorry Blue Line.
Delphina really does know how to do business in Burlingame.
Kids, sports, tired parents, school, the dog. Phone in your order pay, pick it up, get home in time to help the kids with homework.
    Then laundry.
    Thanks Delphina.
    Kudos

Haven’t had a chance to try Delfina, it was just bursting with hopeful customers waiting outside tonight, though. LOVE LOVE LOVE Blue Line, so it will be interesting to try the competition. I hope they are different enough that both can stay in business.
Sorry to see the Turkish place looking very dark this evening (on the corner of Lorton). The menu is gone out of the little frame, and I can’t help but wonder if they’ve called it quits……

  5. hillsider

That spot needs something different. The last three tries have all been the same and really average. Maybe Mingalaba can move to the bigger space?

    Welcome to Burlingame 🙂

Ah!! Thank you for the clarification!

  10. steve

this focus on more and more restaurants is a bed idea for downtown. people who go downtown to eat do not go shopping afterwards, so there are no benefits for other downtown businesses…add increased traffic and a loss of parking, and other businesses suffer. look at san carlos…they allowed a bunch of new restaurants to open on laurel and as a result they saw other businesses struggle because of traffic and parking issues. we don’t need anymore restaurants downtown…burlingame needs a balanced approach or we will see more local businesses fail and more empty storefronts.

  11. Joe

Dinner time is the peak (spike) in traffic demand that makes planners crazy, especially in the US where most want to sit down between 6:30 and 7. That also causes restaurants to close before the Spanish restaurants even open!

  12. fred

Steve is right. Joe is out in left field.

  13. jennifer

So, here is a shout-out for a fabulous new eatery- Yougert Bar at 1115 Burlingame Avenue. It is NOT another frozen yogurt shop! They sell delicious greek yogurt with both sweet and savory toppings. I highly recommend the “Sedi” named for the owner’s mom. Story is quite inspiring. I wish him well in Burlingame. The product is really good and different!

    Dear Longsong,
I am sure that there is some good information in whatever it is yiu are attempting to share.
Take my advice and check in with the City of Burlingame Park and Rec Dept. regarding teaching a language course.
Obviously, sooner or later the need for a “Modern Language” will become nessesary.
    Consider starting a class.
That way we will never have to speak to one another again, look anyone in the eye, and communicate other than texting, or what ever the “Next Big Thing” becomes.
I seriously would take a class in this new language if it became available.
Does anyone know whatever happened to Ebonics?
What about that Universal language that was semi popular in the 50-60’s? What was that called?

  15. Joe

I guess Steve is in left field with me since the two of us are in agreement. Which part do you disagree with Fred? That peak dining hour stresses parking capacity or that B’game restaurants close before those in Spain even really open?

  16. holyroller

    Del Fina..
    Best Pizza ever.
    Great service
    Fair Price
    Awesome food.
If you watch the staff behind the counter you see that they taste the food, care deeply about the presentation, and or as organized as some military operation.
Every single person is nice, and speaks english very well.
(I hate to mention that but it is a problem at times at resteraunts in Burlingame)
    Perfect Pizza.
However, I doubt if this is the place for the Softball or Soccer team after game meal.
I would bring my team there.
    Thanks Del Fina.

Next opportunity we have to meet in public, I will be the person with a 1980’s Boom Box..
I will be playing the song by “Rupert Holmes.”
    “Escape”
Most people know the tune as the “Pina Colada Song.”
I will play it over and over until we are able to look into each others souls.
    We will find each other….
    If you like Pina Coladas.
If you do not like Pina Coladas, we are through.

I love this kooky town. Did you know there was a street sweeper who had to call police because a woman was following him in her car. She said he woke her up and she was following him to see what he was doing.
Joe, Steve was talking about a very real parking situation and you went off on a tangent about late supper and dinner in Spain. The parking problem occurs during the daytime, as well.

  22. holyroller

    Dear President,
Thank you very much for the lesson.

  23. longwong

Hai Guyz!! question..do the restaurants parking conflict with the stores at chow time?? stores close soooooo early in da’Game 🙁 more old farts griping & giving static to the biznesses? hahhaha 😉 Or u can get a bike or scooter like MEEEEEE! l(weeeeeeee)!!! 😉

    TTFN ;-P

  25. Joe

One man’s insight is another man’s “tangent” especially when it’s me and Fred conversing. Sure there is a mid-day peak in parking demand but it’s caused by two things. People not wanting to walk very far (check out the City study on side street utilization) and….drum roll….everyone wanting to eat at about the same time…noon to one. Spanish tangent applies. Eat lunch like the Spaniards and parking demand would smooth out. Tangent complete.

  26. fred

This covers the two problems I have most with the “Citizen’s for a Better Burlingame” and their influence on Burlingame politics.
#1 The notion that the city can somehow change the patterns and behaviors of the residents and comsumers instead of the city adjusting to consumer behavior. I don’t give a rat’s ass how the Spaniards eat. It is completely irrelevant. The city needs to adjust to the traffic and parking needs of the consumers who visit this town. Otherwise they will go elsewhere.
#2 The notion that somehow they can change Burlingame into a European city. This isn’t Europe, it will never be Europe. There is nothing wrong with incorporating European design influences, but this is the San Francisco peninsula and it will always be the San Francisco peninsula. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

  27. fred

A perfect example of this mind over the masses effect that is going on right now is a roundabout on California Drive. When the citizen’s for a better Burlingame got a majority elected to the city council the first thing they did, with absolutely no public input was change the speed limit on California Drive. Unfortunately this was determined to be an illegal speed trap and the state made them rescind the lower speed limit and refund all fines the BPD had enforced.
Fast forward many years and lo and behold a light bulb has hit. Let’s make a roundabout in front of Stack’s and Trio and take the traffic down to one lane on California Drive so we can legally slow down the traffic for “safety reasons”.
Gee, not only does that have a European influence with a roundabout (even though there isn’t any in the bay area on any major thorouhfare, so drivers don’t know what the hell to do) but it also imposes the city’s will upon the drivers, yay! A twofer!
Just put a traffic signal there like the T-Spoon committee recomended, there’s no need to create a huge traffic problem where one isn’t needed or helpful.

  28. fred

The funniest part is it puts all this traffic – cars, bike and pedestrian intermingling with one another with no signals on this cramped circle and they can’t seem to figure out what a clusterf*&# this is going to be.

  29. holyroller@hotwire.com

    Fred!
    Go Baby, Go!

  30. fred

Thank you holyroller, I will: and when the CalTrain electrification occurs all east-west crossings except Broadway will be closed and the amount of traffic on California Drive will increase turing the street into a perpetual traffic jam.
To top it off they’re quietly trying to get two “road diet” programs going that will take both Carolan and California Drive down to one lane with left turn lanes. But nobody is taking into account what losing five out of the six east-west crossings in Burlingame will do to the traffic situation. And how many turn lanes will you need when there is only one left turn to the east in the entire city? But you will need two lanes of traffic leading up to the one crossing at Broadway.

  31. Joe

    Fred,
Might be time to take a little breather. Or some of Holy’s meds. The last time I heard from the Citizens for a Better Burlingame was around 2009. There have not been any meeting announcements and certainly no one has asked for any dues payments in years. You are seeing ghosts, my blogging buddy.
I’m not sure where you came up with “The notion that the city can somehow change the patterns and behaviors of the residents and comsumers instead of the city adjusting to consumer behavior.” First you call my little analogy a “tangent” and now it is a request for city government action?? Chill out. I was just commenting on different dining habits–no forthcoming city ordinance required or desired. Really, it’s just an observation.
Where you are completely WRONG is suggesting we, as taxpayers, should spend multiple millions of dollars that we don’t have so people can park a block closer to their restaurant of choice. That is a fool’s errand so IF you were suggesting that, then……….

  32. Bruce Dickinson

Listen, fellas, I gotta tell ya, Bruce Dickinson thinks his verboseness is contagious! I must admit yes, I know my posts can be long and reflect my stream of consciousness, however, I fail to see the difference between one long post versus 5 shorter ones, that if added together, would be even longer than the one long post! “Right Said Fred” seems to often take the “I’m too sexy for my shirt” attitude by complaining about my posts, yet he seemingly does avidly read them (like the rest of my fan club on here) and hang onto every word, but that’s ok, we can all tolerate some jealousness and self-indulgence once in a while when a valid point is made.
As I brought up numerous times before, Bruce Dickinson is a straight shooter and gives credit where credit is due. Right Said Fred is absolutely right about two points, fellas. One is this whole fascination with trying to emulate all things Europe. Why do we try to copy the “Chafaux” houses, the traffic circles, the cobblestone pavers, the fake town squares? The other day, my wife had our driver take us to Santana Row as the handbag that she immediately could not get her hands on was not in stock at the Union Square store. Talk about the faux European experience at Santana Row, it was horrible!! Fake synchronized fountains to opera music, fake brasseries, fake street vendors, fake european style signs, fake everything! I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that Bruce Dickinson was nauseated by the whole thing. Guys, let America be America with its own distinct character! Union Square in SF is a real square with European influences, quite different than trying to build something purposefully from the ground up to be a bad stucco copy of a French or Italian square. Could you imagine if Columbia Records forced its producers, steeped in creative talent, to emulate the Beatles and Stones and forget about Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, Blue Oyster Cult, and The Byrds and not allow them to be who they are?
Folks, the other point is that oftentimes (not always, mind you, in all fairness) government officials can be patronizing once elected. Yes, they may pander and say anything to get elected, but the day they take office, many will ignore you and try to play “Doctor” of the City, offering prescriptions for everything without even making a diagnosis or listening to what the patients say. In medicine, that’s called malpractice, but somehow in government, this gets no scrutiny?!? Bruce Dickinson does not understand the root cause of this problem. Is it the job that attracts people with character flaws or does the job and power change their character? or a little of both? Interesting questions to ponder, my friends!

  33. Peter Garrison

    Bruce Dickinson for Philosopher King!

  34. fred

Ah, yes. The CBB members no longer pay dues so they are no longer involved in Burlingame poliltics. Sure, Joe…
It’s a tangent because it’s completely meaningless, unless you’re in Madrid. A parking deck is about the only thing that will keep the downtown vibrant, the influx of restaurants is hurting retail and what hurts retail hurts the city revenue. We, as taxpayers? Prop 13 has you covered Joe.

  35. Yogi B

Nobody goes to downtown Burlingame anymore–it’s too vibrant. “Fred” should just pull up in front of Il Fornaio and use valet parking. It’s vibrant. And you don’t need to go into that vibrant restaurant. The valets will park your vibrant car in our vibrant parking lots so you can go to any of our vibrant restaurants. “Fred” can even go to one of the sleepy eateries. If he wants a vibrant retail experience there are a couple of vibrant nail salons offering vibrant manicures for his vibrant self.

  36. holyroller@hotwire.com

    Bruce Dickinson…
Though you have some interesting experience, and share it with us Peons, Serfs, undereducated,I for one am offended by your Facist point of views.
As Franco, and Mussolini did before you, both of them spoke in third person.
I think you may still be holding a grudge about The Revolutionary War.
We won you did not -get over it.
The IRA had the Britsh goverment on their knees.
India beat you folks, The Boers, on and on.
Nevertheless, you do come up with some interesting topics…
Especially regarding your driver and lack of “Quality Goods”-20,000.00 hand bags within a few mile of your Castle.
Everytime I see your post in third person, I think “Douche Bag.”
    I still like your comments.
    HR

  37. Bruce Dickinson

Say it Holy-baby, *the* Bruce Dickinson, yes “the cock of the walk”!!

  38. fred

Yogi B, that is exactly the point. Downtown Burlingame is becoming the most vibrant food court on the peninsula. I agree with Steve, the influx of new restaurants has a negative effect on the retail stores. Without added, convenient parking retail in downtown Burlingame will wither, but the food court will be spectacular. Retail contributes more revenue to the general fund than the restaurants. I don’t know how many restaurants it takes to add up to the sales tax revenue of the Apple store, but I figure it is many.

  39. longwong

Hai Guyz!! …hahahah LOve love LOVE the COCK of the walks comments…tooooo funni 😛

    Sorry.
I do enjoy BD’s posts and I have a feeling that BD may stay for awhile.
    Thats great.

  41. Bruce Dickinson

Holy-baby, listen, I did not take much offense, if any, to your comments about Fascism and my being British, which I am not, unlike the Iron Maiden guy who shares my legendary name. Yes fellas, to be clear, utterances from *the* Bruce Dickinson’s lips can be caustic and witty themselves, so I would be remiss if I didn’t say that I have developed a pretty thick skin over the years and can take it as much, if not even more, than I dish it out. Yes, in fact, I partook in a 3 hour screaming match with the president of Columbia, Clive Davis, who did not initially support the opening of two studios, in LA and SF, to be closer to the emerging West Coast rock scene. I almost permanently damaged my vocal chords, but lucky for Bruce Dickinson, Clive relented, my voice recovered and the rest, as they say, is legend.
Friends, glad to be exploring the space with you guys and maybe we can solve some of the issues facing Burlingame, together!

  42. Peter Garrison

    Love Bruce! Love recording studios.
My Dad and Mom ran Garrison Recording in Long Beach, California for 28 years. Recorded Liberace before he was Liberace and music for the olympic skaters in the days of cutting and pasting audio tape for edits.
When they first started they got a “visit” from some Columbia guys who sat on the front desk and asked Mom about any plans to expand their business; as I said, a Mom and Pop store for 28 years at 1120 Pine Avenue and no farther.

  43. holyroller@hotwire.com

I appreciate you responing to my apology.
I hate when that happens because more or less, I end up at the “Lunitic Fringe” of opinions.
(I assure you nothing could be further from the truth.)
Like you Bruce Dickenson, I have “all the answers to all the questions.”
I do it because it is Fun, Funny, and important to give “people, time for thought.”
So now that we have a “Clean Slate,” What are your thoughts on firearms?
Rifles, and Handguns Avaiable to @ 90% of the US population?
    LOL!

  44. Joe

I will not be starting a new category for that topic! 🙂

  45. holyroller@hotwire.com

    How about this question Joe..
It has to do with a couple of cultural language definitions.
    For Bruce Dickenson
What is the difference between English, and British?
    Cigarettes or Fags
    Chips-French Fries
    Bugger off-F… off
God Save the Queen? -I have no alternative to that
In particular, I would like to know if Bruce Dickenson has ever used the Codswallsup in a sentence?

  46. Joe

Nope, not going to add that one either.

  47. holyroller@hotwire.com

    Sounds good Joe.
Thanks for keeping an open mind and a good since of humor.
