The City is actively recruiting our next City Manager. Here is the advertisement in the Western City magazine which is the monthly magazine of the League of Western Cities.
The salary is Dependent on Qualifications (COQ) and the retirement package is listed right there as an incentive. Y'all have til a week from Monday to apply (Sept. 24th).
I thought this opening was posted months ago.
We have “historic neighborhoods”??? Really??? What are they??? Who wrote this???
Holyroller, the news isn’t that the job is open–the news is that the window for applying closes in a week. Then they can get on with hiring.
The hiring of a new City Manager will have an impact on the City of Burlingame from top to bottom.
I believe the City Elders are the people-collectively that will hire the Manager.
Very important job.
Contact your City Elders regarding what “you” would like to see in the future for Burlingame.

Let me get this straight: I am going to work until I am 70 or 75 or 80 in the private sector getting a company 401K match of 5% per year of my salary going into a non guaranteed retirement program, the rest I need to contribute, until I drop dead so that my city’s employees can retire at 55 with a nice pension. Gee, for some reason that doesn’t sound fair to me. Probably sounds great to a government worker or a someone on a government employee pension plan.
Let’s all make sure to vote for some more tax hikes and bond measures to pay for those salaries and pensions – NOT.
My crystal ball tells me the city of Burlingame will do a horse and pony show trying to find the “best city manager.”
After all the paperwork has been submitted by candidates, they will then “discover” they have a wonderful candidate right under their nose – Jesus Nava. zzzzzz Boy, what a surprise.
With all due respect to the search committee, please really look at all the candidates and see who is the best one for us, the residents of Burlingame. Not who is the best one for you.
They did this when Al Escoffier (sp?) retired as the city librarian and we DO have a good person now who is great city librarian but a city manager does lots more than a city librarian.
As we all are aware, people who work in government whether city, state or fed, tend to pitch a tent for many years and go along to get along. The wheels of government have 2 speeds-slow and stop. Perhaps it is time to bring in someone who has another speed-GO!
I appreciate all that Jesus Nava does – this is not intended as a putdown on his ability. Just wanted to bring in another perspective.

How about we offer $175K, with no fixed benefits pension, and see who applies? We might get some really very good people and be making the change in government that we need, rather than more of the same.
Right on stevek and Two Cents! Why have a search committee when the candidate of choice is already chosen? Why can’t the city REALLY look for the most qualified, best person for the job so that we can see some positive changes take place in little Burlingame. Isn’t anyone ever going to challenge our present council members? We are just like the good ol’ boys of old that everyone complained about. Woe is me.
So you all think Jesus Nava is the chosen one? I believe he is leaving Burlingame to head up an agency in Santa Clara for bigger pay too.
Fine, let Mr Navas leave and replace both him and what’s his name for a lot less. Sounds like a win, win, win.

I am sorry. You are right. I am not very computer savy. I come from the era of dial phones, Three Black and White TV stations. (No remote control-get up. Walk toward the TV. Hit it three times on the side. Tip toe back to your seat.
Girls/women at every single Public School in the Nation-USA were not allowed to pants to school.until @1965-70. (look it up) A lot has changed in the last 50 years.

He “retired” on his own—there is no mandatory retirement age in civil service. Just a strong financial motivation to do so.

The excuses the City Managers Dept share with us “folks” just do not “hold water.”
Do you people know that Every single City of Burlingame Dept Retired Dept Manager has been rehired as a counsultant. Every single one.
It is absurb that the City Elders sign off on this Fiscal Embrassment.
The people who do the most important work-basic everyday needs-water, sewage,park, repair and maintenance are considered the most expensive capital investment the City spends taxpayer on.
There are little or no fires or crime here.
Please take a look at the ratio of cost vs benefit.
Managment cost-product.
Labor force-product.
No wonder we can not find a City Manager. Maybe the ex City Manager of Bell, CA is not busy.
I think Holyroller’s most fervent wish will be granted this month.
The new city manager is to be announced on Monday. Her name is public since it is listed in the Council agenda, but I won’t steal their thunder. She’s coming in from Alameda.
Is her salary and benefits also public?
I jumped the gun…. Salary is $214K as reported in news article. Retirement is 2.5% at 55 as shown in the clipping at the top of this thread.

Burlingame names new city manager

Burlingame’s new city manager, Lisa Goldman, is looking forward to becoming part of the community with which she will be working.
Burlingame City Manager Jim Nantell actually retired at the start of 2012 but stayed on through this year while the council searched for a replacement. Goldman, 44, currently serves as the assistant city manager of Alameda. She was unanimously selected by the City Council to replace Nantell on Oct. 30 in closed session. On Monday, the council will formally approve her contract. Under the proposed contract, Goldman will receive an annual salary of $214,000.
Mayor Jerry Deal described Goldman as “extremely intelligent; a go-getter who will work well with our council.”
Goldman was interested in Burlingame because of the city’s size and active engagement. She noted it’s a well-run city. Goldman knows she has big shoes to fill but is looking forward to working with Nantell for a couple of days in December before he officially retires.
It is really great to see a woman get the biggest, responsible, difficult position in Burlingame Goverment.

Let’s see, if I have this right she’s 42. Let’s say she works until 62. Retires. She gets 2.5 x 20 = 50% of $214K; $107K (adjusted for inflation – and man is that going to be an adjustment) a year in retirement for the next 20 or 30 years. That’s not bad at all.
What would it take someone in the private sector to build up a savings that guaranteed $104K a year indefinitely? What ever that number is, divide it by 20 (years) and that is the real salary we are paying her.
You go girl.

Do not forget the life time medical benefits, she now recieves(entire family) too.
This women worked her life to get to a really important position.
This women created her future.
