Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

From the current e-newsletter from the City we learn

In July the Burlingame City Council will be discussing a proposal to further restrict and possibly completely ban the use of leaf blowers. In preparation for the study session we would appreciate your feedback by responding to a survey that you can take by clicking on the following link.

As usual with SurveyMonkey surveys put together by non-professionals, the survey is a bit disjointed but basically gets the options on the table.  Comments welcome here, too.

    That link is non operational.
Nevertheless, I think it is a great idea to ban leaf blowers in Burlingame.
I look forward to even more unlicenced, undocumented workers, non tax paying, non- business, in my neighborhood to rake leaves.
That includes all “Nannys” as well.
That lack of oversite regarding tax collection has much more of an impact on The City of Burlingame than CELL PHONE DANGER.
Elder Brownrigg, what is your position on undocumented “household workers?”
    Have you employeed any?
What about the other City of Burlingame Elders?
I see a Post article coming..
    PS
The City of Hillsborough Police Dept strictly enforces business licence compliance through Permit Decals- like DMV registration stickers.

The link has been fixed, thanks.

Ban em, ban em now…loud, dirty, smelly. Ban em, ban em now.

  4. alittlebird

Here! Here, Larry. I am with you!

I have seen Brownrigg driving while speaking on his cell phone.
I was hoping for an advocate for fiscal responsibility, as well as honesty.
    What a DB

7:15 am and the leaf-blowers are sounding.

  7. BoogeyMan

Cycling in Tiberon hills on Friday afternoon; One bird singing.
No leaf-blowers whining; pushing dirt and disease into people’s faces, lungs and yards.
Peace and quiet- a real selling point for Burlingame realtors.
Peace and quiet-clean for residents and shoppers.

I have heard that this issue was moved to the August 15 council meeting and that it is doing very well in the surveys.

  9. The city’s leaf blower survey will remain posted on the city’s site at http://www.burlingame.org until July 17.

My daughter inlaw recently submited a claim to the City of Burlingame regarding an injury she received while tripping on the side walk @ Balboa &Carmalita.
Her attorney told her that within the next two years the City of Burlingame homeowners will be responsible for the maintenance of the tree in front of their home. Maintenance= Money
Does that mean the City of Burlingame is eliminating the Park Dept?

  11. JROC

Why was the issue moved? Was there not enough information to make a decision? It has been six months since the issue was raised by the Citizens Environmental Council and we are still studying the issue. We need action not another study or survey.

  12. Shame

Your daughter in law ought to be ashamed of herself. Sueing for tripping on a sidewalk is the most selfish thing I can think of a citizen doing. Shame on her and shame on you for not stopping her.

  13. Anne

The cat has Holyrollers tongue. He knows sidewalks get uneven all over the city of Trees and only a sniveling little gold digger would squeeze the city because of that. But the sniveling little gold digger is a relative so he is quiet.

  14. Anne

Anne, it’s the “Other Anne” signing on-I agree completely with both Shame and you.
With our beautiful trees, uneven sidewalks have been a way of life in Burlingame for many, many years.
Considering Burlingame’s money woes (which Holy is very well-versed in), I am appalled that a citizen would think to sue over an uneven sidewalk.
    Shame, shame!

  15. You always see right through me Anne.
    Hope all is well.

Tonight is the night for this item. It should be interesting since there are solid reasons pro and con. I’ve heard several conversations between well informed, well intentioned folks who fall on opposite sides of the issue. I’m not sure myself and when does that ever happen? 🙂

It seemed the Mayor loves the CEC. She gave them all the time in the world last night, even extra time at the beginning and end, but wouldn’t let two citizens help the Mexican gardners with their presentation. It was sad to watch. I wonder why the Mayor doesn’t want the issue to go to a commission for public input. It seemed like she knew what was best for our labor force.

  18. Harley Sampson

The Mayor acted improperly last night, but the voters will have their say soon enough. Councilwoman Baylock acted responsibly and Councilman Brownrigg was his usual wishy-washy self. Councilman Deal and Councilwoman Keighran (she has a future in politics if she wants it) were good and at least this horrible proposed ordinance won’t be enacted. The “information” from the CEC was a joke. Terri is deeply entrenched with the environmental wacko crowd and boy did it show last night. Joe Galligan was wonderful helping out the gardener who was not well versed in English. The Mayor gave him short shrift and was way out of line. It’s very easy, vote for Councilman Deal and Ricardo Ortiz and dump Nagel.

He makes a valid point, I think. This is really a noise issue, and we have so many sources of noise in all cities: construction noise, non-compliant mufflers on cars and motorcycles, barking dogs, etc.
We can make all kinds of rules and ordinances for these, but at the end of the day, I don’t think most cities have the bandwidth to monitor and control these effectively. Then we’re back to common courtesy, which is also sorely lacking in many cases–but that’s another topic.

  22. alittlebird

I am just reading “Harley Sampson’s” comment and wonder what is going through his/her mind with regard to Keighran’s “future in politics.” She can’t make a decision without consulting her mommy and daddy and she is approaching 50. A future in politics? Only if her mommy and daddy think so. She has no guts, brains, or ability to think independently.

    Wow..
You people are a “Gold Mine!”

  24. hillsider

Not a big fan of people who use “you people” in their posts. Sorry, it’s lazy and a bit insulting to everyone else besides the “one people” you are talking about.

  25. Larry David

    See What I mean!

Stay with me here, kids. The logical dead end is worth the trip. I’ve never heard of the SJSpotlight before, but I saw it in the Post as well:
A discussion among Santa Clara County supervisors on everyday gardening tools this week morphed into concerns about immigration witch hunts.
The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously axed Board President Otto Lee’s proposal for banning the use of gas-powered leaf blowers in unincorporated neighborhoods. Other supervisors worried the law would send a message encouraging residents — annoyed by the noisy equipment — to call the police or U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) on laborers who might be undocumented immigrants.
District 1 Supervisor Sylvia Arenas was the first to push back.
“I just don’t want it to be a reason why residents (report) immigrants that are doing their job … either to get people in trouble with ICE or police,” Arenas said at the meeting. “That will give the kind of message to our community that if we’re prohibiting the use, then somebody’s going to enforce it. People will come to ask us, ‘How are you doing that? You bothered with an ordinance, so let’s see how you’re enforcing it.’”
Lee acknowledged Arenas’ concern and said that wasn’t his intent. His board colleagues agreed there was no ill will.
“I don’t see any type of active enforcement, sending code enforcement to say, ‘Aha!’ That’s absolutely not the approach, especially with what you mentioned,” Lee told Arenas at the meeting. “That’s the last thing our county should spend any resource on whatsoever. That’s not my intent.”
Cities across the Bay Area have grappled with regulating climate impacts and proliferation of noxious fumes and noise from leaf blowers, harming both residents and the workers operating them. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law banning the sale of new gas-powered leaf blowers after 2024.

    ———————
Will Newsom reauthorize the sale of gas leaf blowers to spite ICE? The mind is playing trick on itself. Perhaps Fugit All could weigh in on the relative merits of climate change rules?
What other ordinances should be pass and then studiously NOT enforce?
