  • Bluegrass in B’game

    B'game is often called "Boring game" by those who wish there was more night life in town.  I'm definitely one who misses venues like the Tavern Grill and Towle's when they had music three or four nights a week.  So a bluegrass concert at UMC on Saturday night was a welcome draw.

    Headliners Healing Stream put on a great 16 song set of they call Gospel bluegrass.  Four members of the local Morgenstern, including dad Kevin and lead singer Hailey, were joined by locals Don Kane and Will Stevens to put on a great show.  Kevin's bio includes stints with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and tours with the Jerry Garcia Band and Bonnie Raitt.  Another local gem!

  • Free Parking?

    Since the question came up in comments, but is better placed as its own thread, here is KRN's question:

    Does anyone know why (or how) the Burlingame Limo Service gets to park its vans and limos for free in city parking spaces next to the tennis courts next Washington Park? I walk by these vehicles every day with a big RED Expired symbol in the parking meter. I've watched the police and meter crews drive by without writing a ticket.

    And Pat's response:

    Check with the planning dep't because the limo office is upstairs on Cal Dr at B'game Ave. The limo company most likely has a conditional use permit with required parking. It may have paid the City "in lieu" fees to park in those spots since there is not a lot as part of the property.

    "In lieu" fees aren't common, but do happen.  Parking will be a hot topic this week as the St. Catherine's lot swap is on the Council agenda.  Comment away.

  • Bar Gain

    YaYa's empty space is being filled by the Vinyl Room owners with a new bar.  The Daily Journal profile notes

    Although the bar doesn’t officially have its grand opening until Saturday, it has already seen a steady stream of patrons from the after-work crowd fill the space tucked between the Steelhead Brewery and Straits Restaurant and right across the street from the Burlingame Caltrain station.

    Jose Natividad and Juan Loredo’s Vinyl Room is a lounge and nightclub that enforces a strict dress code on weekends before its customers can come in and dance the night away.

    The Barrel House, on the other hand, will be a “neighborhood bar,” Loredo said.

    The Vinyl Room caters to the 20s to 30s crowd, Loredo said, while the Barrel House is expected to draw the 30s to 50s crowd.

    The mini-heat wave gave a boost to the numerous yoghurt places downtown, but that's easy when it's hot.  Getting the 30s to 50s to support a place might be a little more challenging.  Sir Paul, are you up to the task?

  • Supervisor Pine

    With all 549 precincts reporting, a luxury of an all-mail ballot that everyone should appreciate, Dave Pine has taken the SMC Supe's seat.  Here are the results as reported by Shape the Future:

    GINA PAPAN 20,318 25.8%

    MICHAEL G. STOGNER 5,886 7.5%

    Having hosted two losing election night parties and two winning night parties–and suffered through a close one that went on for weeks–I can tell you the winning parties are WAY MORE FUN!

    Congrats to Dave Pine.   This is the tightest three-way race in a long time in SMC and he is to be congratulated.

  • What is Supertramp?

    Jeopardy! has buzzed in our longtime history teacher at BIS.  According to the Daily Journal article, Mr. Tinkham took the online test two years and

    The show’s call for Tinkham, who has been teaching at Burlingame Intermediate for 21 years, came during a class. Tinkham, like most contestants, was given about six weeks to prepare. He used the time to brush up on geography and history of various cultures.

    He makes his first appearance on TV tonight at 7pm and hopefully will go deep in the two-week Teachers Tournament.  KQED had a nice audio clip of Charley this morning where they asked what his dream category would be.  He said "one word supergroups from the '70's".  That would be totally fun–Boston, Kansas, Styx, maybe Chicago although they might be considered as a '60's group.

  • Bye, bye Styrofoam

    There's formal notice of the styrofoam ban at the end of this piece in the Daily Journal.  It notes

    The Burlingame City Council decided to bar use of Styrofoam and similar products.

    In February, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors passed a ban on polystyrene which goes into effect July 1. Under the county ordinance, vendors in the unincorporated areas of the county are asked to use recyclable, biodegradable or compostable materials like paper, cardboard, corn starch, potato starch or sugarcane instead of polystyrene, commonly known as Styrofoam. Last night, the Burlingame City Council introduced a nearly identical ordinance which would go into effect Jan. 1, 2012. The proposal will go before the council again Monday, May 16.

    Gas-powered leaf blowers are next, but not banned yet.
