Supe’s Race – Journal Endorses Pine

I missed the Daily Post's supervisor endorsement and you know how it is with the Post–if you missed it, you miss it, since it is not on-line.  One of our bloggers posted some of it and I was not impressed.  They appear to give our own Terry Nagel credit for things I have not seen–and I'm watching pretty closely.  More closely than the Post, I think.

So today, the Daily Journal endorsed Dave Pine for Supervisor.  This is available on-line.   Newspaper endorsements always start out so complementary of all the candidates which is generally false.  In this case, Holober and Papan do not deserve the kind words for this reason among others.  But the Pine endorsement is genuine and based on actual accomplishments.  It concludes

When Pine unsuccessfully ran for state Assembly in 2002, he was a political novice with a lot of bright ideas. Now, he has proven himself in elected office and has gained a reputation for his thoughtful and open approach to the toughest issues. He is also a quick learner, which will be key as he will be immediately engaged in challenging and critical decisions on the Board of Supervisors that affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. And his belief in more transparency at the county level through his work on the charter review committee, and this election as a result, proves he is willing to take on the establishment.

Chances are you got your ballot in the mail today.  There's no real need to wait for more union-paid for glossy mail for Holober or robocalls from some lady you've never hear of telling you how nice Papan is.  Just check the Pine box and send it in.

    If you live in Burlingame or you are doing business in this town then you want Terry Nagel as “Supervisor”. Burlingame will get the attention it needs if she succeeds. I hear a lot that other town see Burlingame as unfriendly! True or false someone from out of town may not give the attention Burlingame needs. Terry Nagle is our Mayor. She will represent Burlingame. We should support her. Whoever you are suggesting saying Papan is not nice has the right to express his/her opinion about any of the candidates. It’s okay for a newspaper reporter false or not expresses his/her feelings about any of the candidates but it’s not okay if the person expressing his/her felling is one of the candidates for the race? Support Terry Nagel. Give her a chance. She has a good heart. She is smart and learns fast and she is our Mayor. We should support one of our own.

    Scheherezade Dave Pine is one of our own. He lives much closer to your shop than Nagel and has much a much better sense of what Burlingame needs than Nagel and way more capable than Nagel. Please consider him.

    Terry Nagel has the most relevant experience to be County Supervisor. Her two terms as mayor of Burlingame and eight years on council have allowed Terry the opportunity to serve on many county boards and commissions which have prepared her well for the job of County Supervisor.
    I was able to get a copy of the Post’s endorsement of Mayor Nagel and here it is:
    San Mateo County’s finances are a mess, with a $82 million projected deficit and a pension fund that’s unfunded by $1 billion.
    The county government’s payroll is out of control, with 1,351 of its approximately 5,000 employees making more than $100,000 a year not including benefits. The county had 49 employees who pulled down more than $200,000 last year.
    Government employee unions control the county government, and they’re grabbing for as much money as they can get. We need to put an end to it or else the county will go bankrupt.
    Four experienced elected officials are on the special election ballot – Dave Pine, Richard Holober, Gina Papan and Terry Nagel. Each is attractive in his or her own way, but Nagel is the only candidate taking strong stands on the issues of employee compensation and pension reform.
    She’s not anti-union and, in fact, was a union member at one point in her career. She understands the role unions play in protecting worker rights.
    But as a council member, she has succeeded in controlling benefit and compensation costs in Burlingame. And she formed a committee with other city officials that has identified numerous ways to keep compensation costs down.
    “Because employee compensation is by far the biggest line item in the county budget, I firmly believe that savings in this area must be part of the solution,” Nagel says.
    She believes the county should live within its means and opposes using money from reserves or increasing the county’s sales tax to balance the budget.
    With these views, it’s not surprising that she didn’t get the endorsement of the San Mateo County Labor Council. Instead, the unions are backing her three major opponents, Holober, Papan and Pine. That ought to tell you something.
    The Post is pleased to recommend Terry Nagel for county supervisor.

    It may be true that the other candidates are okay too but Terry Nagel simply much more qualified for the Supervisor position. She is the Mayor of the most desirable town in this county and is doing a great job. Her qualifications speak for itself. She is smart, a mother, wife, council woman, works hard and above all she is a Lady.
    We need more Ladies in the government offices. Trust me it will run much better! Sorry guys! It’s true.
    Support Terry Nagel and you won’t regret your decision.

    Nagel can’t hold a candle to Pine on budget issues. Her life has been spent working for Non-Profits. Thanks but no thanks–I’ll even take a lawyer over a professional beggar.

    Dear Scheherezade,
    How about disclosing how much printing business Terry Nagel has given your business. I would bet $$$ that your PIP printing has done some of her candidate’s brochure’s, postcards, etc.
    You are for 4 any candidate that gives YOU business during the campaign season. There is nothing wrong with that.
    But don’t think that people are stupid enough not to realize you scratch my back and I will scratch yours.

    First of all DO NOT GET PERSONAL. SHE HAS GIVEN ME ZERO!business. None of the candidates give me business. Ask Terry Nagel to show you her books. ‘Two Cents” are you saying that Jonathan and DTN have gotten pay backs $$$$ from Dave Pine since they are backing him up? Are they scratching his back? Shame on you for accusing without facts. Between all of the candidates I like Terry Nagel and know her. She is our Mayor. I would have backed up who ever was our Mayor if he/she was running for higher office. She is one of our own. You don’t like her then don’t vote for her. My business is here to service this community no matter what the color of their skin, their origin, their nationalities or who they like as supervisor for San Mateo county. Burlingame population consist of sophisticated and bright people. Don’t underestimate them. I am honored to serve this community no matter if they are candidates or not.
    We are here to serve and you are included.

    Two cents, by the way the law says” Only printers who belong to Union are to be used!” Therefor so you know perhaps that’s why we were not given the opportunity to print the candidate’s materials. I am sure we would have done much better job.
    Now how much $$$ do you want to bet? I hope you meant all of your words. Is betting in Burlingame illegal?

    Don’t you people think it would be best for all to have a represenitive that is “fair and balanced.”
    Terry Nagel is probably a good candidate for the position.
    Nevertheless, she is from Burlingame, and may have a very limited point of view when it comes to representing other people.
    Burlingame may be the only city on the Peninsula that has weathered the financial crisis.
    Continued to provide “over and above” response to the needs and desires of the City.
    Now that I think about it, I am going to vote for Terry Nagel.

    You are really such a trip, Holy. I just wish my mind worked the way yours does. Nagel doesn’t have a chance of winning this one……not in a million years. She is just a big fish in a little pond. That is all she will ever be. She doesn’t hold a candle to some of the other candidates.

    Anne, don’t vote for Terry Nagel if you do not like her. But don’t be disrespectful to Hollyroller! You stick to the retired librarians! and we choose to support a very smart woman who works hard and wants to do better. At least she is trying and as a Mayor of Burlingame she is doing a lot more for this town than some of the others. She may not be perfect but she is simply a better person. You can’t change my mind who I am going to vote for Terry Nagel. I hope you support her too.

    So Scheherezade and Holy, I would appreciate it if you could give me some concrete examples of what Nagel has done for Burlingame that makes her the best candidate for the supervisor position. I can’t recall any decisions she has made that she hasn’t put back on the docket for further discussion. She is the queen of further discussion and lack of decision making. Again, there are other really qualified candidates running, who actually are actually savvy when it comes to government.

    Vote NO on NAGEL. When asked by friends and neighbors who I am voting for, I just tell them who I am NOT voting for and that is Terry Nagel for one big reason:
    HIGH SPEED RAIL. Terry told all the newspapers that Burlingame is “THE LAUGHING STOCK OF THE PENINSULA” because we don’t want to go along with the plan. I heard her repeat this phrase over and over again.
    We need a Supervisor who will stand up for everyone on the peninsula who has property against, along, near and far from the proposed High speed rail tracks. Nagel just wants us to drink the kool aid and go along to get along.She has not taken a hard stand on this issue.
    Scheherezade, that means your PIP property which runs right up against the track would be taken over by government eminent domain and you would need to relocate your business. You are a very hard working business woman and I would not wish this for you.

    “Two cents”, Please do not start the rumors. The plan for eminent domain has already been considered and our property is not in it. Please get the facts before making any comments. The high speed rail eminent domain does not affect our property. It includes part of Putnam’s and part of Mike Harvey’s. It may affect ours and the neighboring properties during construction due to vibration while they are digging. You bet I am going to be right there to make sure that their engineering will secure my building from shaking etc…I am sure they will take care of us. They are not evil people. They are following what our president likes to do. The high speed rail is coming either we choose Terry Nagel or not. This matter is bigger than Terry Nagel. I wish it wasn’t coming but we have to live with it and try to do what ever we can to get on their good side. Otherwise they won’t help any one of us. Our city council was either sleep or did not think high speed rail can happen. They attacked it too late. Terry Nagel wants what is best for Burlingame. She is our Mayor, our city council woman, lives in this town. Why wouldn’t she want good things for Burlingame? At least Burlingame will have a voice if she is supervisor. My mind is set and I still want a Lady in the government office. Giver her a chance. She listens.

    Not sure gender should be the only consideration as women are already well represented on the Board of Supervisors (3-1.) There was no repsonse to the earlier question about Teri Nagel’s accomplishments and the above endorsement is based solely on her gender and city of residence. I find it condescending to advocate for a “lady” and I believe at least one other candidate lives in Burlingame. What does she bring to the table?

    Mr. Slate, I, too, was wondering why we need a “lady.” I thought we were way past making decisions based on gender.
    But may I please bring up another issue with business owners.
    Dear Business Owner, you have the right to decide who you want to endorse and plaster their name/photo in your shop window. That helps me. It helps me decide who I want to give MY business to in town. I much prefer to spend money at businesses who do not broadcast their personal political preferences.
    Do you ever reflect on the fact that some of your potential customers will not shop in your store if they see candidate signs for people they do not want to see in office?
    I feel sorry for some business owners. The candidate shows up and asks to have a sign placed in their window and they don’t want to hurt feelings and they say OK! Some business owners have told me they feel very pressured.
    Bravo to those businesses that have the common sense to realize that they would be marginalizing some of their customers by placing candidate signs in their windows. When you do, we just walk away from your business and make our purchases elsewhere. Just a thought to ponder.

    Here’s the bottom line from the San Mateo County Times’ endorsement of Dave Pine:
    We favor Pine for two reasons. First, his background as an attorney in Silicon Valley gives him valuable business experience and firsthand insight into the entrepreneurial spirit that drives the region. Second, his low-key style of leadership makes him well-equipped for building consensus on the board and shepherding new ideas to passage.
    San Mateo County needs a new generation of leaders, and Pine is ready.
    We recommend a vote for Dave Pine.
    Pretty much what I’ve been saying all along.

    Isn’t it marvelous that Scheherrezade is cheerleading for Nagel when her print shop runs along the rr track where high speed rail will barrel down.
    Out of curiosity, I looked at the link and see that it is long and windy. Just about the same way Nagel speaks in public. Just when you think she has completed her thoughts, it goes on and on and on. That is why her council meetings are endless.
    Open note to Nagel: be concise, bullet-point. That whole article was a jumbled mess. The only thing revealed is that NAGEL IS FOR HIGH SPEED RAIL IN BURLINGAME.
