I heard about this pirate radio operator on the news yesterday and here is a Daily Journal piece about him

Authorities along the Peninsula are trying to identify a man who has been using emergency radio channels to berate law enforcement officials and call in false reports at local bars, a Burlingame police captain said Wednesday.

Burlingame police first heard the man on the evening of June 22, according to Capt. Mike Matteucci.

He has also been heard on the radios of Belmont and San Mateo police and by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

"He has been on our radio frequency every couple days," Matteucci said. "Sometimes it's a quick couple sentences, and sometimes it will go on intermittently over an hour or two."

The man has blurted out profanities about police, reported false bar fights at various bars around town and made sarcastic comments about officers in the middle of making traffic stops around town, he said.

Anyone know what kind of technology it takes to transmit on those frequencies?  I doubt it's something you can buy at Radio Shack.

  1. Just a guess….but is it Mel Gibson?

  2. Jennifer

‘could be….. Does Mel also have a red corvette?

  3. There are a few ham radios that can be modified to do this. I think the mods are pretty involved, taking the radio apart and soldering inside, so anyone wanting do do this would have to be pretty savvy and determined to break the law.

What sort of crime is this. What kind of punishment can they expect?

There’s probably an accomplice witnessing the police activity so cell phone usage near the incident would be key to solving this crime.

According to the article If the man is arrested, he faces federal charges of unauthorized traffic on emergency frequencies, according to Matteucci.

Good Lord! We have police killing retards, a pirate radio maniac terrorizing the airwaves, Bomb threats,
and general Mayhem. This city is getting a little less boring I would say. I went to Radio Shack & bought a scanner hoping to hear the radio terrorist. Where the hell is he? What’s next? Oh, and porno being made on Oak Grove. Where can I get a copy?

  12. The guy was busted today. The San Mateo County Times reports that Burlingame Police caught the 50 year old man at Paddy Flynn’s (upscale bar on Lorton where numerous upscale patrons stand outside and smoke while imbibing in early morning alcoholic beverages)…..guy say he didn’t do it, but had a modified radio of some type.

Go to http://www.fcc.gov and run his name and you find out that he has a FCC License.
Guess, the moron thought he was smarter than the police.
Also searching San Mateo Court records with the name finds a few interesting facts too.

Good catch indeed. Now the world is 100% safe. And BPD can gun down anyone they want at anytime. For any reason.
You people live in some sort of fantasy world.
    Long live the Pirate!
He wants his little Chinese radio back. It cost a whole 90 bucks.
    Yep highly modified….yea right.
    Your friendly PIRATE. : )
(The movie comes out next year)

I was ratted out. Never trust your drinking buddies. Those were good times. Jerky boys. For those in the know.
I can’t transmit anymore but I listen. I hear the corruption of BPD on a daily basis.
I got 86’d from Paddy Flynn’s. It’s hard to deal with being banned from Burlingames
most high class BAR. So now when I get bored I just drive my Ferrari.
