I never connect my shoulder belt when I drive.  That's because I drive a Nissan that does it for me everytime.  Non-Nissan owners find the sliding belt confusing, but after 18 years it is second nature for me and the click of the waist belt is almost automatic in a Pavlovian sense.  So I am not likely to get one of the new $142 tickets for driving without a seat belt that the Burlingame PD are advertising.

The big Friday press release from local law enforcement indicates seat belt usage in California is 95.3%–so this PR effort and the increased fines are targeted at 4.7% of the drivers in the state.  My unscientific survey says that talking on a cell phone without a hands-free device is at least 10 times more common (47% for the math-challenged).  Here's hoping that while the cops are looking at seatbelts, they will also look for the tell-tale hand to the ear of people who can't figure out how Bluetooth works.

And in a related story from today’s SF Examiner:
SAN FRANCISCO — A statewide campaign to stop texting by teen drivers will come to a San Francisco high school next week.
With school out for summer soon, the campaign is intended to teach teens about the dangers of texting and driving. Distracted driving is considered a major factor in teen driving deaths.
On Thursday, personal injury attorney Brian Panish, who began the campaign, members of the California Highway Patrol, and a woman whose son was killed by a distracted teen driver will visit students at George Washington High School at 11 a.m.

If a Burlingame Police Officer patrolled Burlingame Avenue for 10 minutes, they could nab MANY people talking and texting while driving, especially at the corner of Primrose and Burlingame Avenue. It would be nice to see the PD act on this before someone is injured here.

Plus the people who make illeagal U Turns to get parking spots.
You can always see the result due to the cars back end sticking out in the street and interfering with traffic.
Why do the Police not do the most basic law enforcement?
Really everyone, what do they do all day?

On a slightly related subject. What is the requirement for wearing a helmet while bicycling? Is it mandatory at some age? I thought it was a state law for under 18.
