With demolition scheduled to start in June, it seems the construction trades will be stepping up their picketing of Safeway.  Last month's protest was on the corner and now there are five guys in front of the entrance.  I hear the plans call for the exterior of the building to be complete by Thanksgiving.  We'll see.

  1. So…is the protest about low rates of pay, or some grievance related to the construction of the new Safeway?
If it’s the former – as your other post suggests – then why would the store getting closer to demolition cause an escalation of picketing?
Can you enlighten me? Thanks, David.

I believe it is related to the decision on using or not using unionized labor in the construction of the new building. The closer we get to demo, the closer we get to new construction. I guess they must have some indication that Safeway intends to go non-union. The first guy I spoke to didn’t really have much to say other than to pass out the flyer.

Has anyone noticed the handwritten sign taped to the board showing the Safeway plans in the store? It is covering the date that the new store was supposed to be open and now it says “unknown”. One of the cashiers was saying that because of the work on the Millbrae store and the one on Peninsula Ave, the Burlingame store has been postponed.

There is more updates. Now someone at Safeway has scratched off the old date and written in May 2011 so I guess that means they think they can finish the job by the spring.
