Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

You know it is a slow news weekend when the San Mateo County Times uses its front page to highlight the release of a Burlingame report on disaster response whose details "are basically the same as they were five years ago."  Due to the Labor Day holiday, the City Council is meeting on Tuesday night with two substantive items on the agenda.

First is the issue of whether to keep the Holiday Tree Lighting and Open House on the Avenue on Sunday or move it back to Friday night.  There was a survey done via the city's listserv, talking to residents and the Chamber of Commerce and merchant's Association.  The recommendation will be to move it back to Friday nights.

Second is a discussion of whether to keep the Civil Service Commission, expand the commissioners' roles or disband it altogether.  Duplicating the City's HR department's work is the issue to be discussed.

The starting wage for an “Offical City Clerk” is @ 85,000..00 per year.

    Equals LOTS OF MONEY.
I will be filling out an applicaion as soon as they become avialable.
What are the requirements for the position?
    Have friends in City Hall.
    Education-None
    Job Experience -None
Friends in the Real Estate Business..
    CHA CHING!
That is probably why the posiston should remain an elected position.
Unless, Elder Kerrigan, has another candidate.

According to the city site Q: What are the duties of the City Clerk?
A: The duties of the City Clerk include the administration of City elections, providing support to the City Council, preparing and distribution of agendas of Council meetings and agenda items as required by applicable statutes, maintenance and administration of all official records of the City, including records of all Council minutes, ordinances and resolutions, the administration of a City-wide records management program to include retention schedules, inactive records storage, archives, and other components as provided for by ordinance or resolution, and any other duties that may be established by ordinance or a resolution of the Council.

I believe everyone should be compensated for thier contribution.
But is there not one single office employee (COB) at city hall that can use a letter opener, be trusted to present the results to the council.
These resposiblities seem to be part of every single current office employee that is at City Hall today.
    What is the Big Deal?

I guess there’s no question about whether to keep the lighting at all, or even whether to add other religious/cultural winter festival celebrations to the communal (and government-sponsored) celebration of Christmas.

Love the tree lighting, love the children’s choirs, love the event at City Hall, love that it is back on Friday.
Thank you council and thank you to those who will volunteer to make this happen.
    Thank you!

Will there be invatations sent out to other neighboring communities to contribute? I would like to have the City Elders consider having choirs from the South Pacific Mormon Church, in San Mateo, as well as the East Palo Alto Community Presbaterian, sing as well.
Lets all get together and share.

  8. In the spirit of celebrating our ENTIRE community, I’m appreciative of Burlingame’s continued accomodation of the North Peninsula’s annual Channukah menorah lighting ceremony; I hope it remains here in Burlingame. FYI, as you’ll note from the link below, this event is supported by private financial support/attendees; perhaps the City can do more in this vein with regard to our holiday tree lighting ceremony:

    Daily Journal re Broadway –
At the same meeting, the council unanimously approved street closures allowing for three outdoor movies on Saturdays later this month.
In July, the Council approved allowing an outdoor movie showing in August after the farmers’ market. The success led merchants to request approval to show three more: “Iron Man,” “King Kong” and “Elf.” The movies will play from 7:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. for free where the farmers’ market is held, basically Capuchino Avenue at Broadway and north about 100 feet.

It was a nice night for King Kong. The key was it was still about 68 degrees with no wind at 9:30. We had about 60-70 people and great picture and sound quality. Bravo!
