Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

The Burlingame City Council has an agenda full of decisions, starting with approving the $78 million budget for 2007-2008. Some of the perks set aside for the upcoming year include $50,000 for a business ambassador position, $24,000 for a part-time code enforcement officer, $3,000 for department furniture, $3,000 for counter modifications, $700 for digital cameras for the police department and $6,000 for replacement streetlight poles.

A final vote for the Peninsula Humane Society Center for Compassion that will be housed in a 41,871-foot facility at the corner of 1450 Rollins Road and 20 Edwards Court is scheduled. The proposed facility will be 35,931 square feet with a 5,940-square-foot netted aviary and wildlife area totaling 41,871 square feet. At any one time, the facility would be allowed to house 200 domestic and 218 wild animals.

The council will get its first glance at the Urban Forest Management Plan on Monday night which compiles background, policies in place, criteria for removal and permits, among other things. Several areas of this plan are being developed. A completed plan is scheduled for discussion in August.

Now that the weather is warmer, the council will vote on a policy for using a barbecue in city parks. Highlights of the policy include barbecues must be placed on paved surfaces, must have a cover and must be monitored. Grills over 23 inches in diameter are only allowed with a special permit. Barbecues cannot be placed within 20 feet of play equipment. Barbecues are not allowed on city sidewalks or at any of the following parks: Upper Bayside, Murray Field, Burlingame Golf Center, Mills Canyon and the Shorebird Sanctuary.

At the same meeting, the council will consider making appointments to the Beautification Commission and the Library Board.

The council will vote on a $77,905 contract with EIP/PBS&J for environmental review services related to the Downtown Burlingame Specific Plan.

The council meets 7 p.m. Monday, June 18 at City Hall, 501 Primrose Road. (Daily Journal) (agenda)
