SMUHSD Superintendent Sam Johnson knowingly withheld information from the public when the SMUHSD put forth the $298 million Measure M construction bond. Speaking at a BHS faculty meeting, Johnson stated that a pollster, paid by the district, did not include the district's debt problems when conducting the poll. The pollster (without the debt information) indicated that the public would support $298 million in construction projects.

Johnson stated that he believed that he should build what the public wanted, even though the public was not informed about the $73 million construction cost overruns which was placed upon the district's $3.5 million budget shortfall.

Even though the excessive $73 million Certificates of Participation debt was known at the time to poll was conducted, a decision was made to suppress this information from the public and the poll as it would have diminished the public's willingness to support a new bond. If the public has known about the debt, it most likely would not have supported the bond.

The fear of public rejection was also the reason why the $73 million in construction debt was not included as an item in the $298 million Measure M bond. Once again, the SMUHSD believed that if the public knew about the debt, they would not support the new bond. The district has twice suppressed this debt information from the public, onee when the poll was taken and again in the actual bond itself.

The SMUHSD is now $80 million in debt through consolidation loans. It is reported that the district will have to issue more COP debt in order to clean up the arsenic at Burlingame High School.

It has also become public knowledge that the district had full knowledge of its $73 million debt at the time of the implementation of the 7 period day, $3.5 budget shortfall, and staff lay-offs, but decided not to put the information into the public area.

Are these building to build better students or to build a legacy?

    The public has been deceived.

I am amazed nobody has been fired or or brought up on criminal charges over this whole issue.

KRN, have you filed a complaint with the District Attorney or the Civil Grand Jury?

  4. KRN

The bond issue came up AFTER the $3.5 million shortfall and the addition of a new finance director. (who is on top of things!) It would be logical to assume that the new Asst. Sup of Business told the district to disclase the debt in the bond as it would follow the ethical standards upheld in the post-Enron accounting practices. Suppressing information of this magnatude is questionable.

I am told that the Grand Jury is looking into the a few different issues regarding the SMUHSD. It has also become apparent that those who dare to speak the truth in public or challenge the district are “put on notice.”

The question here is one of ethics. What was done may be legal, but is it ethical?

the folks that “dare to speak the truth in public” are fellow teachers that don’t agree with the various aliases on this blog. the retaliation is not district to teacher, parent to teacher, student to teacher…it is Teacher to Teacher.

please indicate factual information of anyone who dared to speak that has been put on notice for specifically that issue.

You will be supported more with facts.

    Jean,

    wrong…again.

I didn’t say that it was a teacher.

A large dose of truth was offered the other day.

“fellow teachers that don’t agree with the various aliases on this blog. the retaliation is not district to teacher, parent to teacher, student to teacher…it is Teacher to Teacher.”

Nice Try! Maybe you should offer some evidence. Sure, there are some teachers who do not agree. 4% did not support firing the Superintendent.

Thank you for the compliment. Now that it’s out there, those teachers can blog anonymously about the pressure/retaliation the receive from some of their peers. For instance, the intense pressure to join in the “solidarity.”

    Speaking of solidarity:

I like the uniform “emo” look the teachers have on Thursdays; wearing black, pulling long faces, gathering in plotting covens…

    Next up: Mao suits.

More color choice: Party-Loyalist Blue, Great-Leap Olive-Green, or the continuingly popular, I’m Seriously-Socialist Black.

    Jean,

If you come from a family of teachers who took a vow of poverty, (teachers are not in it for the money) then it seems that you don’t recall what put the bread and butter on your table. You may not like the idea of collective bargaining but it is most likely what paid the bills.

HOW DUMB DOES SAM JOHNSON think we are? At last night’s board meeting Sam tried to award his golf buddy a 24 million dollar contract for construction management. This is the same golf buddy that ran the last projects 80 million dollars over for the last bond meansure (ONLY A 65% OVERRUN!). I did some checking today with a firend who is an architect and for a 200 million dollar and according to the state office of school construction the maximum fee for a 200 million dollar program should be about 8 million dollars. Can you say “Halliburton”???? People, wake up!, we are talking about our property taxes here!! Thankfully at least one board member (probably the only one not in Sam’s pocket) is paying attention. Danger, danger, danger. – Will Robinson

KRN, I said I came from a long line of teachers, never said anything about a vow of poverty. I never said I didn’t like collective bargaining. I don’t recall my bread and butter??…where do you get this stuff? It’s comments like this that make all your other comments suspect, even when some of your points are excellent.

I did say that teachers know the salary structure going in, and that structure is not the same for say, a CEO. That’s a lot different than a vow of poverty.

Your post confirms a type of bullying that continues through the halls of the schools and classrooms. If someone doesn’t agree completely, quickly accuse them of something, true or not, and insult them. That’ll shut ’em up, eh?

  13. KRN

    Jean,

Here is your post from the “Greener” thread

“I come from a long line of teachers, and all have said in one way or another what Burlingame Parent stated about the money.

Burlingame Parent? You know teachers claim that the reason they teach is because they don’t care about the money?

    Did I get it wrong?

“Your post confirms a type of bullying that continues through the halls of the schools and classrooms.”

I would counter to state that your comment above is an attempt to discredit the truth. Bullying? I don’t think so.

The comment on collective bargaining was in response to your position to “solidarity.”

I don’t see my position as suspect. It is in response to what you have in fact posted. Bullying? I’m not the one posting positions that the teachers are insulting the taxpayers.

You are one pushing the idea of free choice. If people do in fact have a choice, then there is no threat of coercion.

By the way, I would take a look at Will Robinson if you want to find out who is insulting the taxpayers.

    Hi Jean–
What line of work are you in? Do you have a connection with SMUHSD? I’m interested in knowing where you’re coming from, not trying to instigate anything or cause any problems.

KRN, love the debate, but really. Taking my comments and stretching them to a “vow of poverty” statement just goes way too far.

No,you didn’t get it wrong. I posted those comments. That is what the teachers in my family stated. My perpective. Clearly, not yours.

KRN, and Mac, I post under my real name, and email. I’m really easy to find. Feel free to contact me privately if you wish.

Thanks for your offer, but I’d rather keep this a public forum. Though you didn’t answer my questions, I do appreciate your willingness to discuss the issue further.

  17. KRN

    Two phrases, not much difference.

It doesn’t feel very good to be on the receiving end of the statement.

“they don’t care about the money?

    “vow of poverty”

  18. holy curiosity of inquiry…

what’s the relationship with the SMCOE and SHUHSD? Do the contract deliberations with SMUHSD effect in any way SMCOE?

  19. j.b. good,
The contract deliberations with SMUHSD have a great deal of effect on the SMCOE. The SMCOE has to approve the budget of the SMUHSD. Supposedly the SMCOE told Sam Johnson to keep the health care benefits at the level from last year, so that is why Sam decided to start taking money out of the teacher’s paychecks in January. That is TOTALLY illegal! The health care benefits are part of the contract that the teachers negotiate, so an unfair labor practice suit has been filed, and the teachers are VERY upset that the SMCOE is dictating to Sam what should or should not be in their paychecks. Now I understand why the teachers are so upset. None of this information seems to get into the papers or in the hands of the parents. The teachers need a media person to divulge all of this.
