Dedicated to Empowering and Informing the Burlingame Community

The Rec. Center brochure includes a page on "The Benefits of Urban Street Trees", something which we all know so why not go one step further ….

Why not have a map of Burlingame showing where there are naked places (no trees) and dead places (trees are dying or dead) and those residents who want to donate a tree can easily pick a spot, a species (if appropriate), hand in their check at the Rec. Center and then an email can be sent to the donor when the tree is planted?

This map should be hanging on the Rec. Center Community Board and on the city Website, updated when necessary and Randy should give a presentation every three months to the Council about the status of the trees in this town. This map should also be included in the next Rec. Center brochure. Plus hung in the Library and City Hall, work load permitting.

I know someone in cyperspace is saying – "we do not have the man/woman power to do all the work". The City must have a list somewhere of this information, so why not put dots on a map and show us?

The City needs our help with "reforesting" Burlingame and this would be one way to encourage people to donate to their favorite spot in Burlingame.

We can fill some of these naked and dead spaces with trees – Now – and not down the line.

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised to see the insert on Trees. I do not think the general population has much appreciation for those little facts, so I have to praise the city for printing them. Raising awareness goes a long way towards resolving the problem. I hope they find room to do a ditty on trees, (or repeat this one), in every rec. catalog they print. Yes, it should also have info on donating to the tree fund. I’ve asked and there is not yet a mechanism to purchase anything but general trees, for general purposes. It’s a good start, but hopefully they can iron out the details and let people donate to specific areas, like their own neighborhoods, or even specific trees. Most “causes” offer a check list” general fund, or specific purposes, and it would be nice to follow in these lines.

You can donate to a specific neighborhood (if appropriate). The Parks Department have tree, bench and picnic table requests on the City Wish List so they already have a mechanism in place to accept donations. This is a simple way to be part of the tree solution.

What is a general tree for general purposes?

No Fiona, you cannot donate to a specific neighborhood or a specific area or ask for a specific tree to be planted in a specific area. I’m talking about tree only, not benches or other. I asked Bob Disco about it.

I have just donated monies to the Parks Department and stipulated that I wanted the trees in one of three specific areas:

    (1) Downtown Burlingame
    (2) Or Broadway
    (3) Or Washington Park.

I left the specific species up to the experts and I received a letter from Mr. Richmond with a map showing me where two trees will be planted in Washington Park, as requested.

    Good luck.

Jen, Fiona, you are both correct. Donations can be given to the Park Division for tree plantings in City parks. Two trees were recently planted to replace one we just removed in Washington Park. Fiona’s generous donation helped make that possible and is noted on our Washington Park Commemorative Tree list. At this time we are not set up to receive donations for specific areas such as neighborhood streets, Broadway, B-Ave, etc. Those donations would be deposited into our general tree fund used to purchase street trees for our 3 planting throughout the year.

Thanks, Bob. Please let us know when it is possible to do specific donations for neighborhoods. I’m very happy to donate.
